Shipping discount
A shipping discount takes money off the delivery cost: free shipping, a percentage off, a fixed amount off, or a flat rate you set. It can be aimed at particular destinations, carriers or carts with its own shipping conditions.
-
Open Discounts and click Create discount, then choose Shipping Discounts.
The create menu lists Shipping Discounts under Discounts, with the example “Free shipping on orders over $75”.
-
Choose the discount method and name the discount.
Pick Automatic or Discount Code, then fill in Title (automatic) or Discount Code (code). The Summary card on the right recaps the discount as you build it.
-
Add discount rules for the destinations and carts that qualify.
Click Add your first rule, then pick a condition — Cart subtotal for a spend threshold, or Country code, Shipping city, Province / State code, Postal code, Shipping type or Shipping method to aim it at a destination or carrier. With no rules, the discount applies to all qualifying orders.
-
Choose the discount type and enter the amount.
Set Discount Type to Percentage off, Fixed amount off, Free shipping or Flat rate, then enter the value. Free shipping needs no value.
-
Set combinations, customers, markets and dates, then save.
Choose which other discounts this one may combine with, whether to limit it to customer segments, which markets it runs in, and when it starts and ends. Save from the bar at the top of the page.
Settings
Section titled “Settings”Discount method
Section titled “Discount method”Automatic needs no code — Shopify applies the discount as soon as an order matches. Discount Code means the shopper enters the code you set. The method is chosen at creation and the chooser is disabled afterwards.
Title / Discount Code
Section titled “Title / Discount Code”On an automatic discount, Title is the name shoppers see when the discount is applied. On a code discount the field becomes Discount Code and accepts only letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens.
Add internal title for reference
Section titled “Add internal title for reference”A second name only visible to you. Use it when the customer-facing title is not specific enough for your own list.
Discount Rules
Section titled “Discount Rules”The conditions an order must meet. A shipping discount can use Cart subtotal, Cart quantity, Cart attribute, Customer tags, Customer logged in, Customer is B2B, Customer orders count, and the shipping-only conditions below. Conditions inside a group join with the Between conditions AND/OR toggle; groups join with Match All Rule Groups or Match Any Rule Group.
Shipping type
Section titled “Shipping type”Matches the kind of shipping service, with contains and does not contain — for example Shipping type contains “Express”. Use it when several rates share a word in their name.
Shipping method
Section titled “Shipping method”Matches a named carrier or rate, with equals, contains and does not contain — for example Shipping method equals “FedEx Overnight”. Use it to target one specific rate.
Country code
Section titled “Country code”Destination country as a two-letter ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code (US, CA, GB), with is one of and is not one of. Use it to run a discount in some countries only.
Shipping city
Section titled “Shipping city”Destination city names, with is one of and is not one of. Use it for a local delivery offer.
Province / State code
Section titled “Province / State code”State or province codes (CA, NY, ON), with is one of and is not one of.
Postal code
Section titled “Postal code”ZIP or postal codes (90210, 10001), with is one of and is not one of. Use it for a tightly drawn delivery area.
Discount Type
Section titled “Discount Type”Percentage off takes a share off the shipping cost. Fixed amount off subtracts an amount from it. Free shipping sets the whole shipping cost to zero. Flat rate replaces it with the rate you set, whenever the option costs more than that. An option already cheaper is left alone — a flat rate never raises a price. Switching the type clears the value entered for the previous one.
Percentage
Section titled “Percentage”The share taken off the shipping cost. Greater than 0 and no more than 100 — the field and the server both refuse anything outside that. 100 is the same as free shipping.
Discount Amount
Section titled “Discount Amount”For Fixed amount off, the amount subtracted from the shipping cost. Greater than 0.
Flat Rate Amount
Section titled “Flat Rate Amount”For Flat rate, the shipping price the shopper pays instead of the calculated rate — a 5 flat rate, for instance. Greater than 0. It only ever lowers a price: an option that already costs less than your flat rate is left as it is.
Discount can be combined with:
Section titled “Discount can be combined with:”Ticks for Product discounts, Order discounts and Shipping discounts. Leave them off and this discount runs alone; tick a box and Shopify may apply that kind alongside it.
Maximum discount usage
Section titled “Maximum discount usage”Only shown for a discount code. Limit number of times this discount can be used in total adds a Maximum discount uses field (a whole number greater than 0), and Limit to one use per customer caps it per shopper.
Purchase type
Section titled “Purchase type”One-time purchases, Subscription products, or both — at least one is required. Ticking subscriptions adds First payment only, Limited number of payments (up to 100) or All recurring payments.
Customer eligibility
Section titled “Customer eligibility”Limit to customer segments restricts the discount to shoppers in the segments you pick, and Shopify checks the shopper’s segments before the discount applies, in the cart as well. Up to 5 segments on an automatic discount and up to 20 on a discount code.
Markets
Section titled “Markets”Apply to all markets covers every current and future market. Apply to specific markets lets you pick up to 20; at least one is required once you switch to it.
Active Dates
Section titled “Active Dates”Start Date and Start Time say when the discount begins, and Set End Date adds an end. All times are in your store’s timezone, which the card names on screen.

Section titled “How it shows to the shopper”An automatic shipping discount needs nothing from the shopper: Shopify applies it as soon as the order matches, and the Title you typed is the name shown next to the reduced delivery price. A code discount applies once the shopper enters the code.
The discount lands on the delivery options themselves, so the shopper sees a reduced price on each option it covers. An option that is already free shows no change, because there is nothing to take off.
Limits and notes
Section titled “Limits and notes”- Percentage: greater than 0, at most 100. 100 is free shipping.
- A flat rate never raises a price. It replaces the calculated rate only on options that cost more than the rate you set; a cheaper option is left alone.
- A free delivery option shows nothing. A shipping discount cannot reduce an option that already costs nothing — 30% of free is free. On a store where one market offers free local delivery and another charges, only the charged options change. Verified on a live store, 2026-09-07.
- Customer segments: up to 5 on an automatic discount, up to 20 on a discount code.
- Markets: up to 20 when you pick specific markets.
- Subscriptions: up to 100 recurring payments when you choose a limited number.
- Combinations are Shopify’s call. Ticking a box in Discount can be combined with tells Shopify this discount may run alongside that kind; Shopify decides what actually applies.
- Segments live in Shopify. If a segment is deleted there, Shopify stops enforcing that gate and the discount becomes available to all customers on Shopify’s side. The app shows the missing segment and refuses the save until you remove it or pick another one.
- The method is fixed after creation. Duplicate the discount if you need the other method.
Why does my shipping discount show nothing on a free delivery option? Because there is nothing to take off. A delivery option that already costs nothing stays at nothing. On the same order, the paid options are still discounted.
How do I limit a shipping discount to certain countries? Add a rule with the Country code condition and enter two-letter codes such as US, CA, GB. There are matching conditions for Shipping city, Province / State code and Postal code.
What is the difference between Shipping type and Shipping method? Shipping type matches the kind of service and offers contains and does not contain. Shipping method matches a named carrier or rate and also offers equals — for example Shipping method equals “FedEx Overnight”.
Is Free shipping the same as 100% off? Yes. Free shipping sets the whole shipping cost to zero and needs no amount; the app describes it as 100% off in the type list.
