Product discount
A product discount takes money off the items in the cart rather than the order total: a percentage, a fixed amount spread across them, a fixed amount off each one, or a set price for a quantity. You choose which items qualify, which ones get it first, and how many of them.
-
Open Discounts and click Create discount, then choose Product Discounts.
The create menu lists Product Discounts under Discounts, with the example “10% off selected products or collections”.
-
Choose the discount method and name the discount.
Pick Automatic or Discount Code, then fill in Title (automatic) or Discount Code (code). The Summary card on the right recaps the discount as you build it.
-
Add discount rules for the products that qualify.
Click Add your first rule, then pick a condition such as Specific collections or Product tags, an operator, and the products. With no rules, every qualifying order gets the discount.
-
Choose the discount type and enter the amount.
Set Discount Type to Percentage off, Fixed amount off, Fixed amount off per item or Specific price, then enter the value. A percentage can also be capped with Set maximum discount amount and Set cart value limit for discount calculation.
-
Set the sorting and the item limit.
Sort Products for Discount decides which qualifying items are discounted first, and Limit number of items that get discount adds a Maximum items field so only that many are discounted.
-
Set combinations, customers, markets and dates, then save.
Choose which other discounts this one may combine with, whether to limit it to customer segments, which markets it runs in, and when it starts and ends. Save from the bar at the top of the page.
Settings
Section titled “Settings”Discount method
Section titled “Discount method”Automatic needs no code — Shopify applies the discount as soon as an order matches. Discount Code means the shopper enters the code you set. The method is chosen at creation and the chooser is disabled afterwards.
Title / Discount Code
Section titled “Title / Discount Code”On an automatic discount, Title is the name shoppers see when the discount is applied. On a code discount the field becomes Discount Code and accepts only letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens.
Add internal title for reference
Section titled “Add internal title for reference”A second name only visible to you. Use it when the customer-facing title is not specific enough for your own list.
Discount Rules
Section titled “Discount Rules”The conditions that decide which items and orders qualify. A product discount can use Cart subtotal, Cart quantity, Cart attribute, Customer tags, Customer logged in, Customer is B2B, Customer orders count, Specific products, Specific variants, Specific collections, Product tags, Line quantity, Line subtotal, Line attribute and Has selling plan. Conditions inside a group join with the Between conditions AND/OR toggle; groups join with Match All Rule Groups or Match Any Rule Group.
Discount Type
Section titled “Discount Type”Percentage off takes a share off each qualifying item. Fixed amount off spreads one amount proportionally across them. Fixed amount off per item takes the amount off every qualifying item. Specific price sets a total price for a quantity of items. Switching the type clears the values entered for the previous one.
Percentage
Section titled “Percentage”The share taken off qualifying products. Greater than 0 and no more than 100 — the field and the server both refuse anything outside that.
Set maximum discount amount
Section titled “Set maximum discount amount”Caps the total discount in money whatever the cart is worth, so a 20% discount with a maximum of 50 never gives more than 50 off.
Set cart value limit for discount calculation
Section titled “Set cart value limit for discount calculation”Applies the percentage only up to the cart value you enter. With a limit of 500 and 10% off, an 800 cart is discounted 50 and a 300 cart is discounted 30.
Discount Amount
Section titled “Discount Amount”For Fixed amount off, the single amount spread proportionally across the qualifying items. Greater than 0.
Discount Amount Per Item
Section titled “Discount Amount Per Item”For Fixed amount off per item, the amount taken off each qualifying item — the field’s help text reads “Amount deducted from each qualifying item in the cart”. Greater than 0.
Quantity and Total Price
Section titled “Quantity and Total Price”Shown for Specific price: how many items the shopper must buy, and the fixed total they pay for that many. Use it for “3 for 100” style pricing.
Repeat this pricing
Section titled “Repeat this pricing”Also Specific price: Unlimited lets the deal repeat as often as the cart allows, or Limit to caps how many times it repeats in one order.
Add Tiers To This Discount
Section titled “Add Tiers To This Discount”Turns Specific price into several quantity/price rows at once — 3 for 100, 5 for 150 — up to 15 tiers, each with its own quantity. Two tiers cannot share a quantity.
Sort Products for Discount
Section titled “Sort Products for Discount”Lower-priced items first discounts the least expensive qualifying items first; Higher-priced items first discounts the most expensive first. It only matters when more items qualify than the discount will cover.
Limit number of items that get discount
Section titled “Limit number of items that get discount”Caps how many items are discounted, with Maximum items as a whole number greater than 0. Not offered for Specific price, which sets its own quantity.
Discount can be combined with:
Section titled “Discount can be combined with:”Ticks for Product discounts, Order discounts and Shipping discounts. Leave them off and this discount runs alone; tick a box and Shopify may apply that kind alongside it.
Maximum discount usage
Section titled “Maximum discount usage”Only shown for a discount code. Limit number of times this discount can be used in total adds a Maximum discount uses field (a whole number greater than 0), and Limit to one use per customer caps it per shopper.
Purchase type
Section titled “Purchase type”One-time purchases, Subscription products, or both — at least one is required. Ticking subscriptions adds First payment only, Limited number of payments (up to 100) or All recurring payments.
Customer eligibility
Section titled “Customer eligibility”Limit to customer segments restricts the discount to shoppers in the segments you pick, and Shopify checks the shopper’s segments before the discount applies, in the cart as well. Up to 5 segments on an automatic discount and up to 20 on a discount code.
Markets
Section titled “Markets”Apply to all markets covers every current and future market. Apply to specific markets lets you pick up to 20; at least one is required once you switch to it.
Active Dates
Section titled “Active Dates”Start Date and Start Time say when the discount begins, and Set End Date adds an end. All times are in your store’s timezone, which the card names on screen.

Section titled “How it shows to the shopper”An automatic product discount needs nothing from the shopper: Shopify applies it as soon as the cart qualifies, and the Title you typed is the name shown next to the saving. A code discount applies once the shopper enters the code.
The saving lands on the qualifying items themselves, so the shopper sees the reduction on those lines rather than on the order total. When the discount covers only part of a line — because Limit number of items that get discount is on — Shopify shows the covered and uncovered units as separate lines.
Limits and notes
Section titled “Limits and notes”- Percentage: greater than 0, at most 100.
- Maximum items: a whole number greater than 0.
- Specific price tiers: up to 15, and no two tiers may share a quantity.
- Customer segments: up to 5 on an automatic discount, up to 20 on a discount code.
- Markets: up to 20 when you pick specific markets.
- Subscriptions: up to 100 recurring payments when you choose a limited number.
- A partial item limit splits a cart line by design. Covering 3 units of a line of 5 makes Shopify present the covered and uncovered units separately. Rounding alone never does this.
- Combinations are Shopify’s call. Ticking a box in Discount can be combined with tells Shopify this discount may run alongside that kind; Shopify decides what actually applies.
- Segments live in Shopify. If a segment is deleted there, Shopify stops enforcing that gate and the discount becomes available to all customers on Shopify’s side. The app shows the missing segment and refuses the save until you remove it or pick another one.
- The method is fixed after creation. Duplicate the discount if you need the other method.
Why did one cart line split into two after my discount applied? Because Limit number of items that get discount covers only part of that line. Shopify shows covered and uncovered units as separate lines — a limit of 3 on a line of 5 makes two. It is how a partial-quantity discount is presented, not a rounding error.
What decides which items get the discount when more qualify than the limit allows? Sort Products for Discount. Lower-priced items first gives it to the least expensive qualifying items, Higher-priced items first to the most expensive.
How is Fixed amount off different from Fixed amount off per item? Fixed amount off spreads one amount proportionally across the qualifying items. Fixed amount off per item takes that amount off every qualifying item, so the total grows with the quantity.
What happens if I add no rules at all? The discount applies to every qualifying order — the Discount Rules card says so on screen. Add a condition such as Specific collections to narrow it to particular products.
