How to set up quantity breaks and volume discounts on Shopify

A native Shopify discount has one minimum requirement. How to put a whole ladder of quantity price breaks in one discount and show it on the product page.

DiscountOS is a Built for Shopify discount app that runs multiple offers inside a single automatic discount, including market-specific and tiered discounts.

Does Shopify support quantity breaks natively?

Not inside one discount. The Shopify Help Center page on amount off discounts gives each discount one minimum requirement: you select Minimum purchase amount or Minimum quantity of items, and the page describes no tiers. A quantity ladder built that way is one discount per rung, and each automatic one counts toward the store’s limit, which the Help Center page on discount combinations states as “a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts,” app discounts included. Shopify does have volume pricing in B2B catalogs. The Help Center page on quantity rules and volume pricing in B2B says “Volume pricing lets you offer additional price breaks to customers when they purchase larger quantities of a product in a single order,” and “You can add up to 10 price breaks per product which are applied to each variant.” DiscountOS puts a volume discount ladder in one discount for every customer, with no B2B catalog needed: each tier is a bigger percentage off every unit, Shopify applies the highest tier the cart reaches, and the tier table on the product page shows shoppers what they save.

What does a quantity break ladder look like?

A $20.00 product on a three-tier DiscountOS Quantity Break:

Quantity in the cartTierPrice per item
1No tier$20.00
2 to 410% off each$18.00
5 to 915% off each$17.00
10 or more20% off each$16.00

Tiers replace each other. At 5 items the shopper gets 15% off every unit, not 10% plus 15%.

How do you set up quantity price breaks on Shopify with DiscountOS?

  1. Open DiscountOS, click Create discount, and choose Quantity Break. It sits under Product page offers, with the example “Buy 2, get 10% off each”.
  2. Choose the discount method and name it. Pick Automatic and type a Title, or pick Discount Code and type the code.
  3. Choose the items. In Applies to, pick All products, Specific products or Specific collections.
  4. Set the tiers. A new quantity break starts with buy 2 for 10% off and buy 3 for 15% off. Edit Buy (quantity) and Get (% off each) on each row, and use Add tier for another rung. Each row must be higher than the row above it.
  5. Choose how quantities count. Count tiers set to Across all selected items pools the quantities, so two different products count together. Per product and Per variant make each one reach the tier on its own.

Three rows read Buy (quantity) 2, Get (% off each) 10; 5 and 15; 10 and 20, followed by the Add tier link. Count tiers is set to Across all selected items, 2 different products count together toward a tier, with Per product and Per variant unselected. Below, Show on storefront is switched on with the status Shown on product pages.
  1. Add the tier blocks to your theme. Show on storefront is on for a new quantity break. In the Add to your theme panel, click Add next to Quantity Break Table or Quantity Break Picker. The theme editor opens with the block ready to place; put it near the price or the buy button and click Save.

  1. Set combinations, markets and dates, then save. Use Discount can be combined with:, Markets and Active Dates, then save from the bar at the top of the page.

Every setting is explained in the Quantity Break docs.

How do you set a fixed price or amount off per tier?

Use a DiscountOS Price List. Open Create discount, choose Price List under Product page offers, and set Discount Type to Percentage off, Fixed amount off or Fixed price per item. Then choose Tiers are based on, Count towards tiers and Count tiers, and click Add rule for each tier.

The Price List Configuration card in DiscountOS: Discount Type set to Percentage off, Tiers are based on set to Total quantity of items, Count towards tiers set to Selected products only, Count tiers set to Across all selected items, the Exclude items with a compare-at price checkbox unticked, and an empty Quantity-based pricing rules list with an Add rule button and the example Buy 10+ items, get 10% off each item. On the right, Convert to customer's currency is switched on.

A few Price List rules to know:

  • Pick the Discount Type before the amounts. Changing it clears every tier’s amount, because 10 means 10% off, 10 off, or a price of 10 per item.
  • Fixed price per item never raises a price. Items already at or below the target are left alone.
  • Each rule has its own threshold. The field shows “Another rule already uses this quantity” when two match.
  • Tier title (optional) puts your own name for that tier on the discount line.
  • Only for company (B2B) customers gives the price list to customers buying for a company and to nobody else.

How do you show quantity breaks on the product page?

The DiscountOS storefront widgets draw the ladder on the product page:

  • Quantity Break Table lists every tier with the quantity, what the shopper gets and the price. Display quantities as range shows “2–4” instead of “2+”, and Show original price crosses out the full price next to each discounted one.
  • Quantity Break Picker shows the tiers as tappable deal cards the shopper adds to the cart in one go. Most popular tier tags one card, and Let shoppers mix variants per tier lets shoppers build the tier from different variants.

Tips for placing them:

  • Tiers counted per variant? Place the Quantity Break Picker, which shows them as deal cards.
  • Two offers on one product? Choose which one shows on the discount picks the offer the widget displays.
  • No app embed needed. The blocks render on their own.

Can quantity breaks show on collection pages?

The Quantity Break Table and Quantity Break Picker are product page blocks. To put the offer on product cards on collection pages, create a DiscountOS Sale Badge: leave Fill from a discount off, type Badge text such as “Buy 2, save 10%”, and set Apply to to Specific collections. To cross out prices on product cards instead, a struck-through price suits one flat percentage for every shopper; how to show the discount price on a Shopify product page walks through it.

Questions merchants ask

Does Shopify have quantity breaks built in? How do I show quantity breaks on the product page? Turn on Show on storefront in the discount, then use the Add to your theme panel to place the Quantity Break Table or the Quantity Break Picker block. The blocks follow the discount and show nothing when the offer is paused or over.

Can I show quantity breaks on collection pages? The DiscountOS Quantity Break Table and Quantity Break Picker are product page blocks. For product cards on collection pages, a DiscountOS Sale Badge with your own text, such as Buy 2, save 10%, and Apply to set to Specific collections puts the offer on those cards.

Can a tier set a fixed price per item instead of a percentage? Yes, with a DiscountOS Price List. Set Discount Type to Fixed price per item, and items already priced at or below the target are not discounted. Price List also offers Fixed amount off and tiers based on the amount spent.
