[DiscountOS](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount) reads the tag directly (the condition is called **Customer tags**), on automatic discounts and codes, to include or exclude tagged customers next to cart and product rules. DiscountOS is free. DiscountOS is a Built for Shopify discount app that runs multiple offers inside a single automatic discount, including market-specific and tiered discounts. --- ## Can you give a Shopify discount based on a customer tag? Yes, and for automatic discounts the answer changed in 2025. Shopify’s changelog of 6 August 2025 reads: “We’ve added a new eligibility section for automatic discounts.” An automatic discount can now apply to all customers, selected segments or individual customers. A tag reaches that setting through a segment. Shopify’s segment reference lists a customer_tags filter that “Includes customers based on their tags”, with the example customer_tags CONTAINS 'GoldStatus'. The Shopify Help Center sets Shopify’s cap, which applies to every app: “For automatic discounts, you can have up to 5 customer segments for a single discount.” DiscountOS gives a second route that needs no segment. Its **Customer tags** condition reads the tag straight from the customer record, with **is one of** and **is not one of**, so a VIP discount needs no segment at all. The same rule can also require a cart subtotal, a collection or a signed-in customer, which a segment on its own does not express. ## Customer segment or customer tag condition: which one fits? | What you need | Native Shopify | DiscountOS | |---|---|---| | Automatic discount for one tag | Build a segment on customer_tags, then assign it (Help Center, segment reference) | **Customer tags · is one of · VIP** in **Discount Rules** | | Keep a tag out, like Wholesale | A segment built with customer_tags NOT CONTAINS “Wholesale” (segment reference), then assigned to the discount | **Customer tags · is not one of · Wholesale** | | Tag plus a cart rule (VIP and $100 or more) | A segment covers the tag; the cart rule is a separate setting | One rule group: **Customer tags** AND **Cart subtotal** | | Customer segments | Up to 5 on an automatic discount, up to 100 on a code (Shopify Help Center) | **Limit to customer segments** on Product, Order, Shipping and Price List discounts | A native segment is a good fit when the audience is already a saved segment you reuse across discounts and emails. Shopify’s Help Center says that after you create a segment, “customers are automatically added or removed to the segment list based on whether they meet the segment criteria.” A DiscountOS **Customer tags** condition fits when the tag is the whole rule, when you need to exclude a tag, or when the tag must sit next to cart or product conditions. ## How to set up a discount based on customer tag in DiscountOS 1. **Tag the customers in Shopify.** Add the tag, for example `VIP`, to each customer record in your Shopify admin. DiscountOS reads the tag from the customer record. 2. **Open DiscountOS, click Create discount, and choose a type.** Pick **Product Discounts** for items, **Order Discounts** for the order total or **Shipping Discounts** for delivery. 3. **Choose Automatic and give it a title.** Under **Discount method**, pick **Automatic**, then type a **Title** such as “VIP 15% off”. Shoppers see this title next to the saving. Pick **Discount Code** instead if tagged customers should type a code. 4. **Add the tag rule.** In **Discount Rules**, click **Add your first rule**, set **Field** to **Customer tags**, **Operator** to **is one of**, then type `VIP` and click **Add**. Add `Wholesale` or more tags the same way. 5. **Add more conditions if you need them.** Click **Add condition** for a spend threshold, such as **Cart subtotal · is greater than or equal to · 100**, and keep **Between conditions** on **AND**. Add **Customer logged in · equals · True** so tagged shoppers are recognised from their account. 6. **Set the discount.** In **Discount Configuration**, choose the **Discount Type** and enter the value, for example **Percentage off** and 15. 7. **Optional: add a Shopify segment on top.** On the **Customer eligibility** card, switch on **Limit to customer segments** and click **Select customer segments**. Shopify checks the shopper’s segments before the discount runs, and your tag rule still applies on top. 8. **Choose markets and dates, then save.** Save from the bar at the top of the page. Every field is explained in [Conditions](/docs/rules/conditions/) and [Customer eligibility](/docs/rules/customer-eligibility/). ### Setup values for common tag discounts | Goal | Discount Rules | Discount Type | |---|---|---| | VIP 15% off everything | **Customer tags · is one of · VIP** | **Percentage off**, 15 | | Wholesale price on a collection | **Customer tags · is one of · Wholesale** AND **Specific collections · is one of · Bulk** | **Percentage off**, 30 | | Retail sale that skips wholesale | **Customer tags · is not one of · Wholesale** | **Percentage off**, 20 | | Free shipping for members over $50 | **Customer tags · is one of · Member** AND **Cart subtotal · is greater than or equal to · 50** | **Free shipping** (Shipping discount) | ## Where else can a customer tag gate a DiscountOS offer? | DiscountOS type | Where the tag goes | |---|---| | Product, Order, Shipping | **Discount Rules**, with every other condition | | Price List | **Discount Rules**, next to **Specific products** and **Specific collections** | | Bundle | **Customer Eligibility (Discount Rules)** | | Multi-offer | **Who can use this discount**, for every offer in the discount | | Spend More Save More, Gift with Purchase | The **Customer tags** toggle on the **Conditions** card | | Block codes | A customer tag condition on the rule | Multi-offer is the way to give tagged customers several offers from one automatic discount slot, for example 15% off dresses and free shipping for `VIP`. [How to have more than 25 automatic discounts on Shopify](/guides/shopify-25-automatic-discount-limit/) explains why that matters. ## What to check before you launch a customer tag discount - **Ask tagged customers to sign in.** Eligibility follows the signed-in customer, so a VIP who signs in before checkout gets the VIP discount. - **Tags are exact words.** The rule matches the tag you type. Check the spelling against a real customer record before you save. - **Check the card after deleting a segment.** Shopify drops a deleted segment from the discount. DiscountOS marks it “(no longer exists)” on the **Customer eligibility** card and asks you to remove it or pick another segment before the next save. - **Show the offer only to them.** A DiscountOS [sale badge](/docs/promotions/sale-badge/) you write yourself has **Limit who sees this**, which shows it only to signed-in customers with the tags you list. Pricing a members-only discount? The [break-even guide](/blog/discount-without-destroying-margin/) shows what a percentage does to margin. For free shipping to members in one region, read [how to offer free shipping to specific countries, states or ZIP codes](/guides/free-shipping-discount-by-country/). ## Questions merchants ask **Can a Shopify discount be based on a customer tag?** Yes. Shopify’s changelog of 6 August 2025 added an eligibility section to automatic discounts, so an automatic discount can go to all customers, selected segments or individual customers. A segment built on the customer_tags filter, such as customer_tags CONTAINS 'VIP', turns a tag into a segment you can assign. **How many customer segments can one automatic discount use?** The Shopify Help Center says: “For automatic discounts, you can have up to 5 customer segments for a single discount.” For discount codes the same page allows up to 100. These are Shopify’s limits and apply to every app. A DiscountOS Customer tags condition reads the tag from the customer record, so a tag rule needs no segment. **Can I exclude customers with a tag, like Wholesale, from an automatic discount?** Yes. In DiscountOS the Customer tags condition has two operators, is one of and is not one of, so Customer tags · is not one of · Wholesale keeps tagged wholesale customers out of the discount. Natively, a customer segment built with customer_tags NOT CONTAINS “Wholesale” can be assigned to the discount instead. **How do tagged customers get the discount at checkout?** Tag-based eligibility follows the signed-in customer, so ask tagged customers to sign in to their account before they check out. In DiscountOS, add Customer logged in · equals · True to make that part of the rule. The Shopify Help Center says customers in a segment can be identified when they check out using a valid email address or phone number. **Which DiscountOS discount types can use customer tags?** Product, Order, Shipping, Price List and Bundle discounts take Customer tags in their rules. Multi-offer takes it in Who can use this discount, and Spend More Save More and Gift with Purchase have a Customer tags toggle. Block codes can also check a customer tag. DiscountOS is free. ## Sources - Shopify Changelog, [Customer eligibility for automatic discounts](https://changelog.shopify.com/posts/customer-eligibility-for-automatic-discounts), 6 August 2025: “We’ve added a new eligibility section for automatic discounts.” Read on 26 September 2026. - Shopify Help Center, [Managing and editing your discounts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/managing-discounts): customer and market eligibility, “For automatic discounts, you can have up to 5 customer segments for a single discount.”, “For discount codes, you can have up to 100 customer segments for a single discount.”, and identification by email address or phone number at checkout. The difference is what it costs to keep doing it. BOGOS lists 30 free orders for the lifetime of the app. After that, its Basic plan is $29.99 a month for Shopify Basic stores with 300 orders included, Grow is $49.99 a month for Shopify stores and $69.99 for Advanced, and the Plus plan is $109.99 a month, each charging $0.05 for every order over the allowance. [DiscountOS Gift with Purchase](/docs/discounts/gift-with-purchase/) triggers on a spend amount or an item quantity, supports tiers with a different gift per tier, repeats the gift for every set the shopper buys if you want it to, and caps gifts per order. The DiscountOS app embed adds the gift and removes it when the cart drops below the trigger. There is no order allowance, because there is no plan. The full setup is in the [free gift with purchase guide](/blog/free-gift-with-purchase-shopify/). ## Why DiscountOS wins - **No meter running.** BOGOS counts your orders and bills $0.05 past the allowance. DiscountOS has no allowance and no bill: a record sales month costs the same as a quiet one, $0. - **Free on every Shopify plan.** Basic, Shopify, Advanced and Plus all pay $0. BOGOS prices by Shopify plan, up to $109.99 a month on Plus. - **More than gifts.** Ten discount types in one app: product, order, shipping, Buy X Get Y, bundle, Multi-offer, Price List, Quantity Break, Spend More Save More and Gift with Purchase. - **Several offers in one discount.** DiscountOS Multi-offer runs product, order and shipping offers inside one discount, so a whole campaign uses one of Shopify’s 25 automatic discount slots. See [how to have more than 25 automatic discounts](/guides/shopify-25-automatic-discount-limit/). - **Markets on every discount type.** Every DiscountOS discount can be limited to the markets you choose. See [different discounts for different countries](/guides/shopify-discounts-by-market/). ## How to move a promotion to DiscountOS 1. **Install DiscountOS** from the Shopify App Store and turn on the DiscountOS app embed in your theme, so gifts are added to the cart. 2. **List your live BOGOS offers**: gifts, BOGO, bundles and volume tiers. 3. **Rebuild each one** as Gift with Purchase, Buy X Get Y, Bundle or Quantity Break in DiscountOS. 4. **Schedule the start** for the moment you pause the old offer, so the two never run together. Each discount type is covered in the [DiscountOS docs](/docs/). BOGOS lists a Free plan with 30 free orders for the lifetime of the app, then paid plans from $29.99/month with a monthly order allowance and $0.05 per extra order. Of 14 Shopify discount apps whose listings we read on 26 September 2026, DiscountOS was the only one listed as free with no paid plan. **Can DiscountOS add a free gift to the cart automatically like BOGOS?** Yes. DiscountOS Gift with Purchase adds the gift to the cart when the shopper reaches a spend or quantity trigger and removes it when they drop below, through the DiscountOS app embed. It supports tiers with a different gift per tier and a maximum number of gifts per order, with no order limit. **Does DiscountOS do BOGO, bundles and volume discounts?** Yes. DiscountOS has Buy X Get Y with tiers, Bundle with a fixed bundle price or a percentage, Quantity Break and Price List for volume pricing, and Spend More Save More for tiered spend, all free. **Why choose DiscountOS over BOGOS?** DiscountOS gives you free gifts, BOGO, bundles, volume discounts and a cart goal bar with no order limit and no fee. BOGOS is free for 30 orders in total, then costs $29.99/month on Shopify Basic, $49.99/month on Shopify, $69.99/month on Advanced and $109.99/month on Plus, plus $0.05 for every order over the plan allowance. **Is DiscountOS Built for Shopify?** Yes. DiscountOS and BOGOS both carry the Built for Shopify badge on the Shopify App Store. DiscountOS runs its discounts on Shopify Functions, so they apply in the cart and at checkout like Shopify’s own discounts. ## Sources - BOGOS on the [Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/freegifts): Free plan “30 free orders lifetime by BOGOS”; Basic $29.99/month “Only for Shopify Basic stores”, 300 monthly orders, “$0.05 per extra”, “Work with other offers”; Grow $49.99/month, “$69.99 for Advanced/Unlimited shops”; Plus $109.99/month “Only for Shopify Plus stores”; Built for Shopify. [DiscountOS](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount) **Buy X Get Y** lets you choose whether the cheapest or the most expensive item goes free, repeat the offer for every set of three, and add tiers like buy 4 get 2 free. DiscountOS is free. DiscountOS is a Built for Shopify discount app that runs multiple offers inside a single automatic discount, including market-specific and tiered discounts. --- ## How does buy 2 get 1 free work on Shopify? Buy 2 get 1 free is a buy X get Y offer: the shopper buys two qualifying items and a third qualifying item costs nothing. In Shopify admin you build it as a Buy X get Y discount, with the items the shopper buys in **Customer buys** and the free item in **Customer gets**. The Shopify Help Center sets two rules that shape the result. First, when the buy and get items are the same product or collection, “the lower-priced item that the customer chooses is the item that the customer gets at a discount.” Second, “Customers must add all items to their cart manually,” and the free item “is never automatically added to the cart.” So on a native same-collection offer, the shopper puts all three items in the cart and the cheapest one goes free. DiscountOS Buy X Get Y keeps the same buy-and-get shape and adds **Sort get items for discount**, so the free item can be the cheapest or the priciest, plus a per-order limit and tiers. ## Shopify buy X get Y not working? Set the minimum for same-item offers In DiscountOS Buy X Get Y, **Minimum quantity of items customer must buy** is “how many qualifying items must be in the cart before the reward is given,” and an item that matches both rules counts as a buy item and as a reward item. So when **Customer Buys** and **Customer Gets** point at the same collection, set **Minimum quantity** to **3** for a “pay for 2, get the 3rd free” offer. With **Maximum uses per order** on **Unlimited**, the DiscountOS docs put it this way: “a cart with six qualifying items on a ‘buy 2 get 1’ offer gets three rewards.” Here is what each setting gives on one collection: | Items in the cart | Minimum 2, gets 1 (same collection) | Minimum 3, gets 1 (same collection) | |---|---|---| | 2 | 1 free | 0 free | | 3 | 1 free | 1 free | | 4 | 2 free | 1 free | | 6 | 3 free | 2 free | | 9 | 4 free | 3 free | When the free item comes from a different collection, for example socks with shirts, set the minimum to 2: the shopper buys two shirts and gets one pair of socks. ## Shopify’s Buy X get Y and DiscountOS, side by side | Question | Shopify Buy X get Y (Help Center) | DiscountOS Buy X Get Y | DiscountOS Gift with Purchase, Same item | |---|---|---|---| | Which item goes free when buy and get items are the same? | The lower-priced item | Your choice: **Lower-priced items first** or **Higher-priced items first** | A unit of the gift variant | | Limit per order | **Set the maximum number of uses per order** | **Maximum uses per order**: Unlimited or Limited | **Maximum gifts per order** | | Is the free item added to the cart? | “never automatically added to the cart” | The shopper adds it | Yes, when the Promotions app embed is on | | Tiers (buy more, get more) | Not described on the Buy X get Y Help Center page | A ladder of tiers in one discount | Use Buy X Get Y for tiers | | Markets | Markets can be chosen under eligibility | All markets or the markets you pick | All markets or the markets you pick | The Shopify Help Center page on Buy X get Y discounts describes no setting that makes the higher-priced item the free one. ## How to create buy 2 get 1 free in DiscountOS 1. **Open DiscountOS, click Create discount, and choose Buy X Get Y.** It sits in the **Discounts** section of the create menu, with the example “Buy 2, get 1 free”. 2. **Choose Automatic and type a Title.** Shoppers see the **Title** next to the saving, so “Buy 2 get 1 free” works. 3. **Set Customer Buys.** Click **Add your first rule** and pick *Specific collections · is one of · T-shirts*. Set **Minimum quantity of items customer must buy** to **3** when the free item comes from the same collection, or **2** when it comes from a different one. 4. **Set Customer Gets.** Add a rule for the reward items, for example the same *Specific collections · is one of · T-shirts*. 5. **Set the reward.** In **Discount Configuration**, set **Quantity of items customer gets** to **1** and **Discount type** to **Free**. 6. **Choose how often it applies.** Under **Maximum uses per order**, keep **Unlimited** so every set gets a free item, or pick **Limited** and enter **Maximum number of uses**. 7. **Choose which item is free.** Set **Sort get items for discount** to **Lower-priced items first** to give away the cheapest item, or **Higher-priced items first** to give away the most expensive one. Higher-priced items first is the default. 8. **Set combinations, purchase type, markets and dates, then save.** Save from the bar at the top of the page. Every field is explained in the [Buy X Get Y docs](/docs/discounts/buy-x-get-y/). ### Buy more, get more with tiers Tick **Add Tiers To This Discount** to turn one offer into a ladder. Each tier has its own **Customer buys quantity**, **Customer gets quantity**, **Discount type** and value. The DiscountOS docs example: buy 2 candles and get one at 25% off, buy 4 and get 2 free. **Sort get items for discount** applies to every tier. ## How to do buy 2, get the 3rd free of the same product When the offer is on one product, like a pack of socks in one color, DiscountOS Gift with Purchase has a mode built for it, and with the Promotions app embed on it puts the free unit in the cart for the shopper. 1. **Open DiscountOS, click Create discount, and choose Gift with Purchase.** It sits under **Advanced**. 2. **Type a Title**, for example “Buy 2 get 1 free”. 3. **Set The gift unlocks by to Minimum quantity** and enter **2** in **Minimum quantity**. Keep **Gift tiers** off. 4. **Pick the gift** in **Free gift**: the product variant the offer runs on, for example “Cotton socks, Black”. Set **Free quantity** to **1**. 5. **Turn on Same item as the gift.** The gift is now one of the qualifying items rather than a different product. 6. **Set Maximum gifts per order** if you want a ceiling, then set combinations, markets and dates, and save. 7. **Turn on the Promotions app embed.** With the embed on, Gift with Purchase adds the free unit to the cart once the cart qualifies. For a repeating offer across a mixed collection, use Buy X Get Y with **Maximum uses per order** on **Unlimited**, as in the steps above. Every Gift with Purchase setting is explained in the [Gift with Purchase docs](/docs/discounts/gift-with-purchase/). For a free gift that is a different product, like a tote over $100, read [free gift with purchase on Shopify](/blog/free-gift-with-purchase-shopify/). ## Which DiscountOS setup fits your offer? | Your offer | DiscountOS setup | |---|---| | Buy any 2 from a collection, get the cheapest of 3 free | Buy X Get Y · minimum 3 · gets 1 · Free · **Lower-priced items first** | | Buy any 2, get the most expensive of 3 free | Buy X Get Y · minimum 3 · gets 1 · Free · **Higher-priced items first** | | Buy 2 shirts, get 1 pair of socks free | Buy X Get Y · buys Shirts, minimum 2 · gets Socks, 1 · Free | | Once per order, however much they buy | **Maximum uses per order**: Limited · **Maximum number of uses**: 1 | | Buy 2 get 1 at 25% off, buy 4 get 2 free | Buy X Get Y · **Add Tiers To This Discount** | | Buy 2, get the 3rd of the same product free | Gift with Purchase · Minimum quantity 2 · **Same item as the gift** | ## Tips before you launch - **Price out the free item.** Giving away the most expensive of three costs more than giving away the cheapest. Use it to check your minimum. - **Combinations are Shopify’s call.** Ticking a box in **Discount can be combined with** tells Shopify this discount may run alongside that kind; Shopify decides what applies. - **Every automatic discount uses a slot.** The Shopify Help Center says: “You can have a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts. The Shopify Help Center describes an optional Set the maximum number of uses per order box on a Buy X get Y discount, and a limit of 1 stops the offer after one set. In DiscountOS Buy X Get Y, set Maximum uses per order to Unlimited, and set Minimum quantity to 3 when the buy and get items are the same, so every set of three gives one free item. **Does Shopify add the free item to the cart automatically?** Not with a Buy X get Y discount. The Shopify Help Center says: “Customers must add all items to their cart manually. The free or discounted ‘get’ item is never automatically added to the cart.” DiscountOS Buy X Get Y works the same way. DiscountOS Gift with Purchase adds the gift to the cart when the Promotions app embed is on. **Can I make the most expensive item the free one?** In a native Shopify Buy X get Y discount where the buy and get items are the same, the Help Center says the lower-priced item is the one discounted. In DiscountOS Buy X Get Y, set Sort get items for discount to Higher-priced items first and the most expensive qualifying item goes free. **How do I set up buy 2, get the 3rd free of the same product?** Use DiscountOS Gift with Purchase. Set The gift unlocks by to Minimum quantity, enter 2, pick the product variant as the gift, set Free quantity to 1 and turn on Same item as the gift. The third unit of that variant becomes the free one. **Is DiscountOS free?** Yes. DiscountOS is free to install and use, and Buy X Get Y and Gift with Purchase are included. [DiscountOS](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount) adds **Set maximum discount amount** to percentage Product, Order and Multi-offer discounts, on automatic discounts and discount codes. DiscountOS is free. DiscountOS is a Built for Shopify discount app that runs multiple offers inside a single automatic discount, including market-specific and tiered discounts. --- ## Does Shopify have a discount cap or maximum discount value? A capped percentage discount gives a percentage off up to a fixed money ceiling, for example 20% off with a maximum of $50 off. The Shopify Help Center page on amount off discounts walks through the settings of a native discount: **Value** (percentage or fixed amount), **Applies to**, **Minimum requirements**, **Maximum discount uses**, **Combinations** and **Active dates**. That page describes no maximum discount amount. The nearest-sounding setting, **Maximum discount uses**, is a different control: the Help Center describes it as a way to “set a total number of times that a discount can be used.” It counts redemptions, not dollars. So on a native percentage discount, a $4,000 order at 20% off gets $800 off. DiscountOS puts a ceiling on it with **Set maximum discount amount**, which caps the money taken off, and **Set cart value limit for discount calculation**, which caps the cart value the percentage is worked out on. Both sit on percentage Product and Order discounts and on percentage offers inside Multi-offer. The difference matters most on big orders. Here is 20% off with a $50 maximum: | Cart value | 20% off, no cap | 20% off, **maximum $50** | |---|---|---| | $100 | $20 off | $20 off | | $250 | $50 off | $50 off | | $800 | $160 off | **$50 off** | | $4,000 | $800 off | **$50 off** | Below $250 the shopper gets the full 20%. From $250 up, the discount stays at $50. ## Maximum discount amount or cart value limit: which one do you need? DiscountOS gives two ways to put a ceiling on a percentage. They sit next to each other in the **Discount Configuration** card. | Setting | What it caps | Example from the DiscountOS docs | |---|---|---| | **Set maximum discount amount** | The money taken off | 20% off with a maximum of 50 never gives more than 50 off | | **Set cart value limit for discount calculation** | The cart value the percentage is worked out on | 10% off with a limit of 500: an 800 cart gets 50 off, a 300 cart gets 30 off | Use **Set maximum discount amount** when you think in “never more than $X off”. Use **Set cart value limit for discount calculation** when you think in “the percentage counts up to a $Y cart”. On an order discount the two reach the same ceiling when the numbers match: 20% of a $250 limit is $50. ### Where each setting is in DiscountOS | DiscountOS discount type | Set maximum discount amount | Set cart value limit for discount calculation | |---|---|---| | **Product discount**, Percentage off | Yes | Yes | | **Order discount**, Percentage off | Yes | Yes | | **Multi-offer**, product and order offers set to Percentage off | Yes, per offer | Yes, per offer | ## How do you cap a percentage discount with DiscountOS? These steps use an Order discount. A Product discount has the same two checkboxes in the same card. 1. **Open DiscountOS, click Create discount, and choose Order Discounts.** It sits under **Discounts** in the create menu. Choose **Product Discounts** instead when the percentage should come off chosen items, not the order total. 2. **Choose the discount method and name it.** Pick **Automatic** and type a **Title** such as “Summer sale · 20% off”, or pick **Discount Code** and type the code. 3. **Add discount rules if you need them.** Click **Add your first rule** for a condition such as *Cart subtotal · is greater than or equal to · 100*. With no rules, the discount applies to all qualifying orders. 4. **Set the percentage.** In **Discount Configuration**, set **Discount Type** to **Percentage off** and type the **Percentage**, for example 20. 5. **Tick Set maximum discount amount.** Type the ceiling in **Maximum Discount Amount**, for example 50. 6. **Or tick Set cart value limit for discount calculation.** Type the cart value in **Cart Value Limit**, for example 250. 7. **Set combinations, customers, markets and dates, then save.** Save from the bar at the top of the page. The finished setup, as it reads in the [Order discount docs](/docs/discounts/order/): ``` Discount method: Automatic Title: Summer sale · 10% off Discount Type: Percentage off Percentage: 10 Set maximum discount amount: ticked Maximum Discount Amount: 50 ``` ### Capping one offer inside a Multi-offer discount In a [Multi-offer](/docs/discounts/multi-offer/) discount, each product or order offer set to **Percentage off** has its own **Set maximum discount amount** and **Set cart value limit for discount calculation**. One discount can hold a capped order offer and an uncapped product offer side by side. The Multi-offer docs show a code that gives 10% off the order, capped at 40: ``` Discount method: Discount Code Discount Code: WEEKEND10 Order discount 1 → Discount type: Percentage off · Percentage: 10 Order discount 1 → Set maximum discount amount: ticked · Maximum Discount Amount: 40 ``` ## What to know before you cap a discount - **The cap is a ceiling, not a target.** Small carts still get the full percentage. The cap starts working at the cart value where the percentage reaches it. - **Set a minimum spend with a Cart subtotal rule.** On a capped Order discount, add a rule such as *Cart subtotal · is greater than or equal to · 100*, and leave **Require a minimum order amount after product discounts** off when you use a cap. - **Currencies.** On an Order discount, **Convert to customer’s currency** moves the discount amount, the maximum discount and the maximum cart value. On Multi-offer it moves fixed amounts, caps and money conditions on every offer. The [Markets and currency docs](/docs/rules/markets-and-currency/) list what moves for each type. - **Codes can be capped twice.** On a discount code, **Maximum discount usage** limits the number of uses in total and per customer, and **Set maximum discount amount** limits the money per order. Choosing the percentage in the first place? The [break-even guide](/blog/discount-without-destroying-margin/) shows what a percentage does to margin. To stop the capped discount landing on items already marked down, read [how to exclude sale items from a discount](/guides/exclude-sale-items-from-discount/). Running many campaigns at once? The Shopify Help Center allows “a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts,” app ones included, and [how to have more than 25 automatic discounts on Shopify](/guides/shopify-25-automatic-discount-limit/) covers running more offers in fewer slots. ## Questions merchants ask **Does Shopify have a maximum discount value setting?** The Shopify Help Center page on amount off discounts lists Value, Applies to, Minimum requirements, Maximum discount uses, Combinations and Active dates, and describes no maximum discount amount. DiscountOS adds Set maximum discount amount to percentage Product and Order discounts, so 20% off never gives more than the amount you type. **Is Maximum discount uses the same as a maximum discount amount?** No. In the Shopify Help Center, Maximum discount uses limits how many times a discount can be used. A maximum discount amount limits how much money one order can get off, which is what Set maximum discount amount does in DiscountOS. **What is the difference between a maximum discount amount and a cart value limit?** A maximum discount amount caps the money taken off. A cart value limit caps the cart value the percentage is worked out on. In DiscountOS, 10% off with a cart value limit of 500 gives 50 off an 800 cart and 30 off a 300 cart. **Can I cap a discount code as well as an automatic discount?** Yes. Set maximum discount amount appears on DiscountOS Product, Order and Multi-offer percentage discounts with either method, Automatic or Discount Code. On a code you can also limit the total number of uses and one use per customer. **Does the cap change in other currencies?** On a DiscountOS Order discount and a Multi-offer discount, Convert to customer’s currency moves the maximum discount into the currency the customer pays in, so a cap of 50 is worth 50 to them. DiscountOS is free. ## Sources - Shopify Help Center, [Amount off discounts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-types/percentage-fixed-amount): the settings of a native amount off discount, and “Check Limit number of times this discount can be used in total to set a total number of times that a discount can be used.” Read on 26 September 2026. - Shopify Help Center, [Discount combinations](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-combinations): “You can have a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts. To disable or restrict a code on the carts you choose, with your own message, use [DiscountOS](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount) (the feature is called **Block codes**). It blocks exact codes or code patterns and can pause every code during a sale. DiscountOS is free. DiscountOS is a Built for Shopify discount app that runs multiple offers inside a single automatic discount, including market-specific and tiered discounts. --- ## How do you disable a discount code on Shopify? In Shopify admin you disable a code by deactivating it. The Shopify Help Center says a shopper who then applies it receives an error stating that your store is “Unable to find a valid discount matching the code entered”, and the page on managing discounts describes no setting for a custom message or for switching a code off on some carts and not others. Shopify’s Discount Function API has the mechanism developers use: an operation that “rejects entered discount codes with a custom message”, which “can only be used if the function is backed by an automatic discount.” DiscountOS puts that mechanism in a form, under **Block codes**. You choose **Block specific codes** or **Pause all codes during a discount**, list codes or patterns, add conditions such as cart total or customer tag, and type the **Custom message** shoppers read. The code keeps working on every cart your rule does not match. ## Deactivate the code in Shopify, or restrict it with DiscountOS? | What you need | Deactivate in Shopify admin | DiscountOS Block codes | |---|---|---| | Disable a code on every cart | Yes, deactivate it (Help Center) | **Block specific codes** with no conditions | | Restrict a code to some carts | Not described on the Help Center page on managing discounts | **Conditions** on the rule: cart total, item count, past orders, customer tag and more | | Message the shopper sees | “Unable to find a valid discount matching the code entered” (Help Center) | Your **Custom message** | | Disable a family of codes | No pattern matching described on the Help Center page on managing discounts | **Starts with**, **Ends with** or **Contains** | | Pause every code during a sale | Not described on the Help Center page on managing discounts | **Pause all codes during a discount** | | Turn the code back on | Reactivate the code | Switch the rule off, or delete it | ## How to disable a discount code with your own message in DiscountOS 1. **Open Block codes and click Create rule.** Once you have rules, the button in the page header reads **Add rule**. 2. **Choose the rule type.** **Block specific codes** blocks the codes and patterns you list. **Pause all codes during a discount** blocks every code while a discount you pick is active. 3. **List the codes.** Under **Which codes to block**, pick **Exact code**, **Starts with**, **Ends with** or **Contains** from the dropdown, type the value and press Enter. Each entry becomes a chip. Entries take letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens. 4. **Add conditions to restrict the code to some carts.** The **Conditions** card starts with “This rule always applies. Add a condition to limit when it refuses the code.” Click **Add condition** for a cart total, item count, past orders, customer tag, logged-in status, B2B order, a collection, a product tag or a subscription item. With two or more, choose **all of these** or **any of these**. 5. **Write the message.** Type it in **Custom message**. The **Preview** card shows it where a shopper enters a discount code, and the **Summary** recaps the rule. 6. **Save the rule.** Your first save creates an empty automatic discount named “Block codes by DiscountOS”. It holds no value and shoppers never see it. Keep it active so your rules run. 7. **Order your rules.** Rules check top to bottom, and the first match decides the message. Use the arrows on each row to reorder them. Every setting is explained in the [Block codes docs](/docs/block-codes/), and each condition field in [Conditions](/docs/rules/conditions/). ### Setup values for common restrictions | Goal | Rule type and codes | Condition | Custom message | |---|---|---|---| | Disable staff codes on this order | **Starts with** `EMP-` | none | Staff codes can’t be used on this order. | | Free shipping code on orders over 50 | **Exact code** `FREESHIP` | **Cart subtotal · is less than or equal to · 50** | FREESHIP applies to orders over 50. | | No codes during the summer sale | **Pause all codes during a discount**, **Which discount?** Summer sale | none | Codes are paused right now. | ## Tips for restricting discount codes - **Pause all codes follows the sale’s dates.** Codes are paused from the chosen discount’s start date to its end date, and they work again once it ends. - **Deleting a rule turns its codes back on at once.** The app says: “Codes it blocked will work again right away.” - **Switch a rule off to keep it for later.** Each rule on the list has its own switch, and off leaves the rule saved. - **All your rules share one automatic slot.** “Block codes by DiscountOS” is an automatic discount, and the Shopify Help Center says: “You can have a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts. This total includes app-based discounts.” [How to have more than 25 automatic discounts on Shopify](/guides/shopify-25-automatic-discount-limit/) shows how to get more from each slot. ### Disabling codes after Shopify Scripts Some older threads disable codes with a Shopify Script. The Shopify Help Center page on Shopify Scripts now reads: “As of June 30, 2026, Shopify Scripts has been deprecated. Any Scripts that were still published on your store have been deactivated and no longer work.” A DiscountOS Block codes rule is set up in a form, with no code to write. Want a discount that goes to certain customers in the first place? Read [how to give an automatic discount to customers with a specific tag](/guides/automatic-discount-by-customer-tag/). For a side-by-side of Shopify discount apps, read [the best Shopify discount apps in 2026](/blog/best-shopify-discount-apps-2026/). ## Questions merchants ask **What does a shopper see when they enter a deactivated Shopify discount code?** The Shopify Help Center says they receive an error stating that your store is “Unable to find a valid discount matching the code entered”. The page on managing discounts describes no setting to change that message. **Can I disable a Shopify discount code with my own message?** Shopify’s Discount Function API has an operation that “rejects entered discount codes with a custom message”, and it “can only be used if the function is backed by an automatic discount.” That is developer territory. DiscountOS gives merchants the same result from a form (the feature is called Block codes), and shoppers read the message you write. **Can I restrict a discount code to some carts?** Yes. A DiscountOS Block codes rule can check cart total, item count, past orders, customer tag, logged-in status, a collection or a product tag before it refuses the code. For example, block FREESHIP when the cart subtotal is less than or equal to 50, and the code keeps working on bigger carts. **Can I stop every discount code during a sale?** Yes. The DiscountOS rule type Pause all codes during a discount blocks every code while the discount you pick is active, measured by its start and end dates. Codes work again once that discount ends. **Does disabling codes with DiscountOS use one of my 25 automatic discount slots?** Saving your first DiscountOS Block codes rule creates one empty automatic discount named Block codes by DiscountOS, and the Shopify Help Center counts app-based discounts toward the 25 active automatic discounts. All your rules share that one discount. DiscountOS is free. ## Sources - Shopify Help Center, [Managing and editing your discounts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/managing-discounts): deactivating a discount, and the error “Unable to find a valid discount matching the code entered”. Both apps can put more than one offer inside one Shopify discount, and that matters because Shopify allows 25 active automatic discounts per store, app discounts included. Discount Kit describes its Custom discount as returning “multiple product discount proposals” and choosing between them with a first matching, maximum or all discounts strategy, and its docs add that market conditions can be set per proposal. Its pricing page lists the Custom discount type and “Markets, currencies, B2B & segments” on the Pro plan at $99.99 per month. DiscountOS Multi-offer holds product, order and shipping offers in one discount. Each DiscountOS offer has its own discount type and value, qualifying items, requirements and markets, and the merchant picks **Apply the first matching discount**, **Apply the discount that saves the most** or **Apply all matching discounts**. DiscountOS lists no paid plan, so every store gets Multi-offer for $0, where Discount Kit asks $99.99 a month for it. For the slot maths, read [how to have more than 25 automatic discounts on Shopify](/guides/shopify-25-automatic-discount-limit/). ## Why DiscountOS wins - **$0, for good.** DiscountOS is free with no paid plan. Of 14 Shopify discount apps whose listings we read on 26 September 2026, DiscountOS was the only one listed as free with no paid plan. - **Pro features without the Pro plan.** Several offers in one discount, markets and per-currency amounts are Discount Kit’s $99.99/month tier. In DiscountOS they are part of the free app. - **Markets on every discount type.** Every DiscountOS type, from Buy X Get Y to Gift with Purchase, can be limited to the markets you choose, and each Multi-offer offer can pick its own. See [different discounts for different countries](/guides/shopify-discounts-by-market/). - **The storefront comes with it.** Sale badges, price drops, quantity break tables, a bundle picker and a cart goal bar ship in the same free app. - **Ten discount types in one app.** Product, order, shipping, Buy X Get Y, bundle, Multi-offer, Price List, Quantity Break, Spend More Save More and Gift with Purchase. ## How to move a promotion to DiscountOS 1. **Install DiscountOS** from the Shopify App Store. 2. **List your live promotions** and group the ones that run at the same time. 3. **Create one Multi-offer discount per campaign.** Add one offer per rule: its own discount type, items, requirements and **Available in** markets. 4. **Choose the overlap rule** under **When discounts overlap**. 5. **Schedule the start** for the moment you end the old discount, so the two never run together. Each step is covered in the [Multi-offer docs](/docs/discounts/multi-offer/). DiscountOS Multi-offer puts product, order and shipping offers inside one discount, each with its own value, items, requirements and markets, and you choose whether the first match, the best deal or every offer applies. Discount Kit lists its Custom discount type on the Pro plan at $99.99/month. **Does DiscountOS support different offers per market?** Yes. Every DiscountOS discount type can be limited to the markets you choose, each Multi-offer offer can pick its own markets, and the DiscountOS Order discount can hold an exact amount for each currency you sell in. Discount Kit lists Markets, currencies, B2B and segments on its Pro plan. **Why choose DiscountOS over Discount Kit?** DiscountOS gives you several offers in one discount, offers per market, exact per-currency amounts, tiers, gift with purchase and storefront widgets for $0. Discount Kit starts at $49.99/month, and its Custom discount type and markets sit on the Pro plan at $99.99/month. Over a year, that is about $600 to $1,200 you keep. **Is DiscountOS Built for Shopify?** Yes. DiscountOS and Discount Kit both carry the Built for Shopify badge on the Shopify App Store. DiscountOS runs its discounts on Shopify Functions, so they apply in the cart and at checkout like Shopify’s own discounts. ## Sources - Discount Kit on the [Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/discount-kit): “From $49.99/month”, Built for Shopify; features listed: tiered product and order volume, gift with purchase, storefront widgets, currency conversion. [DiscountOS](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount) does it three ways: **Buy X Get Y** and **Product discount** with **Higher-priced items first**, and **Multi-offer** with **Highest-value items first**, so buy 3 pay for 2 can make the priciest item free. DiscountOS is free. DiscountOS is a Built for Shopify discount app that runs multiple offers inside a single automatic discount, including market-specific and tiered discounts. --- ## Can you discount the most expensive item in a Shopify cart? Yes. Which item gets the saving depends on how the discount orders the qualifying items. Shopify’s native Buy X get Y discount decides for you: when the product or collection in **Customer gets** is the same as in **Customer buys**, the Shopify Help Center says “the lower-priced item that the customer chooses is the item that the customer gets at a discount.” So a native buy 3 pay for 2 on one collection gives away the lower-priced item the shopper chooses. The Help Center page on Buy X get Y discounts describes no setting that flips this to the higher-priced item. DiscountOS adds that choice in three discount types. Buy X Get Y has **Sort get items for discount**, with **Higher-priced items first** as the default. Product discount has **Sort Products for Discount** with an item limit. Multi-offer has **Limit discounted items** and **Overall item limit**, both with **Highest-value items first**. Set high to low, each of them gives the saving to the most expensive qualifying item. ## Cheapest item free or most expensive item free? When the buy and get items are the same, the free item counts toward this minimum, so 3 is the whole set. 4. **Set Customer Gets** to the same *Specific collections · is one of · Outerwear*. 5. **Set Quantity of items customer gets to 1 and Discount type to Free.** 6. **Set Maximum uses per order.** **Unlimited** gives one free item for every 3 in the cart. **Limited** with **Maximum number of uses** set to 1 gives one free item per order. 7. **Set Sort get items for discount to Higher-priced items first.** It is the default. 8. **Set combinations, markets and dates, then save.** The shopper adds the three items to the cart, and the free one is the most expensive of them. Every field is explained in the [Buy X Get Y docs](/docs/discounts/buy-x-get-y/), and the minimum is covered in depth in [how to do buy 2 get 1 free on Shopify](/guides/buy-2-get-1-free/). ## How to take a percentage off the most expensive item A DiscountOS Product discount can discount one item, the priciest, with no buy-and-get setup. 1. **Open DiscountOS, click Create discount, and choose Product Discounts.** 2. **Choose Automatic and type a Title**, for example “25% off your top pick”. 3. **Add the qualifying items.** Click **Add your first rule** and pick *Specific collections · is one of · Outerwear*. To require a cart size first, add *Cart quantity · is greater than or equal to · 3* in the same group with **Between conditions** on AND. Cart quantity counts every item in the cart. 4. **Set Discount Type to Percentage off** and enter the **Percentage**, for example 25. 5. **Set Sort Products for Discount to Higher-priced items first.** It decides which qualifying items are discounted first. 6. **Tick Limit number of items that get discount** and enter **1** in **Maximum items**. 7. **Set combinations, markets and dates, then save.** Every field is explained in the [Product discount docs](/docs/discounts/product/). ## How to do it inside a Multi-offer discount A DiscountOS Multi-offer discount holds several offers in one automatic discount. Use it when the most-expensive-item offer runs next to other offers, or needs a requirement measured on one group of items. 1. **Open DiscountOS, click Create discount, and choose Multi-offer Discount.** It sits under **Advanced**. 2. **Under What does this discount give?, switch on Product discount.** 3. **Set the Discount.** **Discount type**: **Percentage off**, **Percentage**: 100 for a free item, or a lower number. 4. **Name the items in Qualifying items**, for example a group called “Outerwear” with *Specific collections · is one of · Outerwear*. 5. **Add a Requirement.** Measure the “Outerwear” group with **Quantity (sum)** and a value of 3, so the offer starts at 3 items from that group. 6. **Under Applies to, pick the group in Discount these items**, then set **Limit discounted items** to **Highest-value items first** with a quantity of **1**. 7. **Add other offers, set the overlap rule and dates, then save.** To cap discounted items across every offer in the discount, use **Overall item limit** with **Highest-value items first**. It overrides the per-offer limits. The [Multi-offer docs](/docs/discounts/multi-offer/) cover every setting, and [how to have more than 25 automatic discounts on Shopify](/guides/shopify-25-automatic-discount-limit/) explains why several offers in one discount save slots. ## Tips before you launch - **Most expensive or cheapest is a margin decision.** Higher-priced first is generous; lower-priced first protects margin. Pick on purpose. - **Test a cart with two items of the same price.** When prices tie, check which line the discount lands on. - **Combinations are Shopify’s call.** Ticking a box in **Discount can be combined with** tells Shopify this discount may run alongside that kind; Shopify decides what applies. - **Two product discounts on one item follow Shopify’s plan rule.** The Shopify Help Center says: “To combine multiple product discounts on the same line item, your store must be on the Shopify Plus plan.” It applies to every discount, from Shopify admin or any app. For a set price instead of a free item, read [how to create a mix and match bundle discount on Shopify](/guides/fixed-price-bundle-mix-and-match/). For a side-by-side of Shopify discount apps, read [the best Shopify discount apps in 2026](/blog/best-shopify-discount-apps-2026/). ## Questions merchants ask **Can customers get the most expensive product free with a buy 3 pay for 2 discount?** Yes, with DiscountOS Buy X Get Y. Point Customer Buys and Customer Gets at the same collection, set the minimum to 3 and the reward to 1 item, choose Free, and set Sort get items for discount to Higher-priced items first. With Maximum uses per order on Unlimited, every set of 3 gives the most expensive remaining item free. **Which item does a Shopify Buy X get Y discount make free?** When the buy and get items are the same product or collection, the Shopify Help Center says “the lower-priced item that the customer chooses is the item that the customer gets at a discount.” The Help Center page on Buy X get Y discounts describes no setting to make the higher-priced item the free one. **How do I take a percentage off the single most expensive item?** Use a DiscountOS Product discount. Set the percentage, set Sort Products for Discount to Higher-priced items first, tick Limit number of items that get discount and enter 1 in Maximum items. Add a Cart quantity or Cart subtotal rule if the cart has to reach a size first. **What is the difference between Limit discounted items and Overall item limit?** Both are DiscountOS Multi-offer settings. Limit discounted items sits on one product offer and caps how many items that offer discounts. Overall item limit caps how many items get discounted across the whole cart and overrides the per-offer limits. Both can rank by Highest-value items first. **Is DiscountOS free?** Yes. DiscountOS is free to install and use, and Buy X Get Y, Product discount and Multi-offer are included. DiscountOS carries the Built for Shopify badge on the Shopify App Store. ## Sources - Shopify Help Center, [Buy X get Y discounts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-types/buy-x-get-y): “If the product or collection is the same as the one set in the Customer buys section, then the lower-priced item that the customer chooses is the item that the customer gets at a discount.” “Customers must add all items to their cart manually.” Read on 26 September 2026. - Shopify Help Center, [Discount combinations](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-combinations): “You can have a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts. Its free Starter plan allows 10 variants and 3 campaigns, Lite at $9.90 a month allows 150 and 10, Essential at $29.90 allows 1,000 and 30, and the top plan at $49.90 allows 10,000 and 100. BOGO and shipping campaigns start on Lite, auto-added free gifts and multiple tiers on Essential, and customer segment targeting on the top plan. DiscountOS has no plans, so it has nothing to meter. A [product discount](/docs/discounts/product/) can target whole collections, so a storewide sale is one discount however many variants it covers, and every discount type from [Buy X Get Y](/docs/discounts/buy-x-get-y/) to [Gift with Purchase](/docs/discounts/gift-with-purchase/) is in the free app. Every deal is a real Shopify discount applied on top of your prices, so your catalogue is never rewritten. ## Why DiscountOS wins - **No meter on your catalogue.** Discounty counts discounted variants, from 10 on free to 10,000 on its top plan. DiscountOS targets whole collections with no plan cap. - **Every type on day one.** BOGO, shipping, tiers and auto-added gifts are plan upgrades on Discounty. In DiscountOS they are all free. - **Segments without the top plan.** Customer segment targeting is Discounty’s $49.90 tier. DiscountOS gates product, order, shipping and price list discounts to Shopify segments for free. - **Markets on every discount type.** Every DiscountOS discount can be limited to the markets you choose. See [different discounts for different countries](/guides/shopify-discounts-by-market/). - **Your prices stay yours.** DiscountOS never rewrites product prices: the discount applies on top, and ending the sale is ending the discount. ## How to move a promotion to DiscountOS 1. **Install DiscountOS** from the Shopify App Store. 2. **List your live Discounty campaigns** and the products or collections each one covers. 3. **Rebuild each one** as a Product discount, Buy X Get Y, Quantity Break or Gift with Purchase in DiscountOS, targeting collections where you can. 4. **Schedule the start** for the moment you end the old campaign, so the two never run together. Each discount type is covered in the [DiscountOS docs](/docs/). For more apps side by side, read [the best Shopify discount apps in 2026](/blog/best-shopify-discount-apps-2026/). ## Questions merchants ask **Is there a free alternative to Discounty?** DiscountOS is free with no paid plan. Discounty’s free Starter plan is limited to 10 live discounted variants and 3 campaigns, and its paid plans run $9.90, $29.90 and $49.90 a month. Of 14 Shopify discount apps whose listings we read on 26 September 2026, DiscountOS was the only one listed as free with no paid plan. **Does DiscountOS limit how many products I can discount?** No plan limits them, because DiscountOS has no plans. A DiscountOS discount can target whole collections, so a sale on 5,000 variants is one discount. Discounty’s plans cap live discounted variants at 10, 150, 1,000 and 10,000. **Can DiscountOS do BOGO, shipping discounts and auto-added gifts?** Yes, all free. DiscountOS has Buy X Get Y with tiers, shipping discounts by rate and destination, and Gift with Purchase, which adds the gift to the cart through the DiscountOS app embed. Discounty lists BOGO and shipping campaigns on Lite ($9.90/month) and auto-added free gifts on Essential ($29.90/month). **Why choose DiscountOS over Discounty?** DiscountOS gives you every discount type, tiers, auto-added gifts and customer segments for $0, with no variant or campaign cap. Discounty starts free for 10 variants and 3 campaigns, and customer segment targeting sits on its $49.90/month plan. **Is DiscountOS Built for Shopify?** Yes. DiscountOS and Discounty both carry the Built for Shopify badge on the Shopify App Store. DiscountOS runs its discounts on Shopify Functions and never rewrites your product prices. ## Sources - Discounty on the [Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/discounty-bulk-discount-sales): Starter Free “10 Live discounted variants”, “3 Campaigns limitation”; Lite $9.90/month (150 variants, 10 campaigns, “Create BOGO and Buy X get Y campaign”, “Create Shipping discount campaign”); Essential $29.90/month (1000 variants, 30 campaigns, “Add multiple discount tiers option”, “Auto-add to cart option for free gifts”); Discounty $49.90/month (10,000 variants, 100 campaigns, “Target campaigns by customer segments”); Built for Shopify. All read on 26 September 2026. ## How do DiscountOS and Dollarlabs compare on several offers in one discount? Both apps can put more than one offer inside one Shopify discount, which matters because Shopify allows 25 active automatic discounts per store, app discounts included. Dollarlabs describes this on its own site as “Single code, multiple offers”, where one code can carry different discount amounts per category or trigger multiple offers at once, and names its engine the Unified Discount Engine v2. Its listing starts at $25 per month on the Pro plan. DiscountOS Multi-offer holds product, order and shipping offers in one discount, automatic or code. Each DiscountOS offer has its own discount type and value, qualifying items, requirements and **Available in** markets, and the merchant picks **Apply the first matching discount**, **Apply the discount that saves the most** or **Apply all matching discounts**. DiscountOS lists no paid plan, so every store gets Multi-offer for $0, where Dollarlabs puts every feature behind a $25 monthly plan. The slot maths is in [how to have more than 25 automatic discounts on Shopify](/guides/shopify-25-automatic-discount-limit/). ## Why DiscountOS wins - **$0, for good.** DiscountOS is free with no paid plan. Of 14 Shopify discount apps whose listings we read on 26 September 2026, DiscountOS was the only one listed as free with no paid plan. - **The headline feature, without the subscription.** Several offers in one discount is the reason merchants look at Dollarlabs. DiscountOS gives it to every store free, with product, order and shipping offers side by side. - **Markets on every discount type.** Every DiscountOS type, from Buy X Get Y to Gift with Purchase, can be limited to the markets you choose, and each Multi-offer offer can pick its own. See [different discounts for different countries](/guides/shopify-discounts-by-market/). - **The storefront comes with it.** Sale badges, price drops, quantity break tables, a bundle picker and a cart goal bar ship in the same free app, so shoppers see the deal before checkout. Dollarlabs lists From $25/month, with a Pro plan at $25/month and an Advanced plan at $79/month. Of 14 Shopify discount apps whose listings we read on 26 September 2026, DiscountOS was the only one listed as free with no paid plan. **Can DiscountOS put several offers in one discount like Dollarlabs?** Yes. DiscountOS Multi-offer puts product, order and shipping offers inside one discount, each with its own value, items, requirements and markets. Dollarlabs describes “Single code, multiple offers” and its Unified Discount Engine v2 on its own site. **Does DiscountOS support market-specific offers and per-currency amounts?** Yes. Every DiscountOS discount type can be limited to the markets you choose, each Multi-offer offer can pick its own markets, and the DiscountOS Order discount holds an exact amount for each currency you sell in. Dollarlabs says market and region conditions can be combined with per currency fixed amounts. **Why choose DiscountOS over Dollarlabs?** DiscountOS gives you several offers in one discount, market-specific offers, exact per-currency amounts, gift with purchase and storefront widgets for $0. Dollarlabs charges from $25/month for its Pro plan and $79/month for Advanced. Over a year, that is $300 to $948 you keep. **Is DiscountOS Built for Shopify?** Yes. In a DiscountOS Order discount (the feature is called **Item exclusions**), pick the products and collections, such as gift cards, that stay at full price, and choose whether they count toward your minimum spend. DiscountOS is free. DiscountOS is a Built for Shopify discount app that runs multiple offers inside a single automatic discount, including market-specific and tiered discounts. --- ## Can you exclude products from a Shopify order discount? An order discount takes a percentage or a fixed amount off the whole order, so by default the saving is spread across the items in the cart. The Shopify Help Center page on amount off discounts lists the settings of a native **Amount off orders** discount: **Value**, **Minimum requirements**, **Maximum discount uses**, **Combinations** and **Active dates**. That page describes no setting that excludes chosen products or collections from an order discount. Two gift card rules are documented. The Help Center page on discounting gift cards says: “Discounts that apply to specific collections don’t apply to gift card products within the collection.” And the amount off page says: “Purchased gift cards don’t count towards the minimum purchase amount unless you specifically select the gift card product for the discount.” The native workaround is to switch to an **Amount off products** discount on chosen collections, which turns an order discount into a product discount. DiscountOS keeps it an order discount and adds **Item exclusions** instead. ### Shopify workaround or DiscountOS Item exclusions? | Need | Native Shopify | DiscountOS Order discount | |---|---|---| | Take a percentage off the whole order | Amount off orders | **Percentage off** | | Leave named products at full price | No exclusion setting on the amount off page; rebuild as Amount off products on the collections you want | **Select products to exclude** | | Leave whole collections at full price | No exclusion setting on the amount off page | **Select collections to exclude** | | Leave gift cards at full price | The Help Center says collection discounts don’t apply to gift card products in the collection | Pick the gift card product to exclude | | Decide whether excluded items help reach a minimum | Not described on the amount off page | **Count excluded items toward requirements** or **Ignore excluded items everywhere** | ## How to exclude products and gift cards from a discount in DiscountOS 1. **Open DiscountOS, click Create discount, and choose Order Discounts.** It sits under **Discounts** in the create menu, with the example “$10 off orders over $50”. 2. **Choose the discount method and name it.** Pick **Automatic** and type a **Title** such as “Autumn 15% off”, or pick **Discount Code** and type the code. Item exclusions work the same way for both. 3. **Set the discount.** In **Discount Configuration**, set **Discount Type** to **Percentage off** or **Fixed amount off** and type the value. 4. **Tick Don’t apply this discount to specific items.** It sits in the **Item exclusions** card. The help text reads: “Excluded items stay in the cart at full price.” 5. **Pick what to exclude.** Use **Select products to exclude** for single products, such as your gift card product, and **Select collections to exclude** for whole collections, such as gift wrap. 6. **Choose how excluded items count.** Under **Minimum requirements (discount rules)**, keep **Count excluded items toward requirements** or pick **Ignore excluded items everywhere**. 7. **Set combinations, customers, markets and dates, then save.** Save from the bar at the top of the page. The finished setup, as it reads in the [Order discount docs](/docs/discounts/order/): ``` Discount method: Automatic Title: Autumn 15% off Discount Type: Percentage off Percentage: 15 Don't apply this discount to specific items: ticked Select collections to exclude: Gift wrap Minimum requirements (discount rules): Count excluded items toward requirements ``` ## Should excluded items count toward the minimum spend? The choice under **Minimum requirements (discount rules)** decides it. Take a 15% order discount with the rule *Cart subtotal · is greater than or equal to · 150*, and a cart holding a $80 scarf, $60 gloves and a $50 gift card, with the gift card excluded. | Setting | What it does, per the app’s help text | Cart counted for the rule | Result | |---|---|---|---| | **Count excluded items toward requirements** (default) | Excluded items still count toward minimums like cart total, and they get no discount | $190 | 15% off $140 = $21 off | | **Ignore excluded items everywhere** | “Requirements and the discount both act as if excluded items are not in the cart” | $140 | Rule not met, no discount | Pick **Ignore excluded items everywhere** when buying a gift card should not unlock the order discount. ## Can you exclude items from other DiscountOS discount types? | DiscountOS discount type | Exclusion setting | |---|---| | **Order discount** | **Don’t apply this discount to specific items** in **Item exclusions** | | **Spend More Save More** | **Exclude specific items** in **Applies to** | | **Multi-offer**, order offers | **Don’t apply this discount to specific items** in **Item exclusions** on each order card | ### Spend More Save More A [Spend More Save More](/docs/discounts/spend-more-save-more/) discount takes each tier’s percentage off the entire order. Turn on **Exclude specific items**, pick products or collections, then choose under **Spend tiers and conditions**: **Count excluded items toward them** (the default) or **Ignore excluded items everywhere**. The same card has **Exclude items on sale**, covered in [how to exclude sale items from a discount](/guides/exclude-sale-items-from-discount/). The Spend More Save More docs show a ladder that leaves gift cards and sale items alone: ``` Discount method: Automatic Title: Autumn savings Tier 1 → Spend (amount): 75 · Get (% off the order): 5 Tier 2 → Spend (amount): 150 · Get (% off the order): 10 Tier 3 → Spend (amount): 250 · Get (% off the order): 15 Exclude specific items: on Select collections to exclude: Gift cards Spend tiers and conditions: Count excluded items toward them Exclude items on sale: on ``` ### Multi-offer Every order offer inside a [Multi-offer](/docs/discounts/multi-offer/) discount has its own **Item exclusions**, with the same product and collection pickers and the same count or ignore choice. One discount can hold an order offer that skips gift cards next to product and shipping offers. ## Tips for excluding products from a discount - **Excluded items are not removed.** They stay in the cart at full price, and the discount is calculated on the rest of the order. - **Pick at least one product or collection.** Once the checkbox is ticked, choose what to exclude before you save. - **Storefront widgets follow the exclusions.** On Spend More Save More, the tier table shows on the product pages the offer covers. - **Other discounts still apply.** Excluding an item from this discount does not stop a different discount from reaching it. Combinations are Shopify’s call. Capping the same discount on big orders? Read [how to cap a percentage discount at a maximum amount](/guides/cap-percentage-discount-maximum/). For the slot limit on automatic discounts, read [how to have more than 25 automatic discounts on Shopify](/guides/shopify-25-automatic-discount-limit/). ## Questions merchants ask **Can you exclude products from an order discount in Shopify?** The Shopify Help Center page on amount off discounts describes no setting that excludes chosen products from an amount off order discount. DiscountOS adds Item exclusions to its Order discount: tick Don’t apply this discount to specific items and pick the products and collections that stay at full price. **Do Shopify discounts apply to gift cards?** They can. The Shopify Help Center says you can create discounts that apply to specific gift card products, and that discounts that apply to specific collections don’t apply to gift card products within the collection. To keep a gift card out of a DiscountOS order discount, pick the gift card product under Select products to exclude. **Can I exclude products from an order discount code, not just an automatic discount?** Yes. A DiscountOS Order discount runs as Automatic or as a Discount Code, and Item exclusions sit in the same form for both. Spend More Save More and each order offer inside a Multi-offer discount have the same product and collection pickers. **Do excluded items still count toward the minimum spend?** You choose. Count excluded items toward requirements, the default, lets excluded items help reach your minimums while they get no discount. Ignore excluded items everywhere makes the requirements and the discount act as if those items are not in the cart. **Can I exclude items from a tiered spend discount?** Yes. A DiscountOS Spend More Save More discount has Exclude specific items in its Applies to card, with the same count or ignore choice for spend tiers and conditions. DiscountOS is free. ## Sources - Shopify Help Center, [Amount off discounts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-types/percentage-fixed-amount): the settings of a native amount off order discount, and “Purchased gift cards don’t count towards the minimum purchase amount unless you specifically select the gift card product for the discount.” Read on 26 September 2026. - Shopify Help Center, [Add a discount to a gift card](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-gift-card): “Discounts that apply to specific collections don’t apply to gift card products within the collection.” Read on 26 September 2026. - DiscountOS on the Shopify App Store, listed as [DiscountOS ‑ Market Discount](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount): Built for Shopify, free. - DiscountOS documentation: [Order discount](/docs/discounts/order/), [Spend More Save More](/docs/discounts/spend-more-save-more/), [Multi-offer](/docs/discounts/multi-offer/), [Conditions](/docs/rules/conditions/). --- # How to exclude sale items from a discount on Shopify Source: https://discountos.app/guides/exclude-sale-items-from-discount/ Updated: 2026-09-26 To stop a Shopify discount code or automatic discount from applying to sale items, use a [DiscountOS](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount) discount that skips anything priced below its compare-at price: the Shopify Help Center page on amount off discounts describes no such setting. Turn on **Exclude items on sale** on a spend tier discount, or **Exclude items with a compare-at price** on a quantity tier discount. DiscountOS is free. DiscountOS is a Built for Shopify discount app that runs multiple offers inside a single automatic discount, including market-specific and tiered discounts. --- ## What does Shopify do natively to exclude sale items from a discount? A sale item is a product whose price is below its Compare-at price, the crossed-out price shoppers see next to the sale price. Excluding sale items means a discount code or automatic discount skips those items, so a shopper cannot add 20% off on top of a 30% markdown. The Shopify Help Center page on amount off discounts walks through **Value**, **Applies to**, **Minimum requirements**, **Maximum discount uses**, **Combinations** and **Active dates**, and describes no setting that skips items on sale. The native workaround goes through collections. The Help Center page on collection conditions defines **Compare-at price is not set**: “A product matches when any of its variants has an empty Compare-at price value.” A merchant can build an automated collection with that condition and pick it under **Applies to**. Two limits follow from the same page: the condition reads whether the field is empty, not whether the price sits below it, and “Zero (0) isn’t the same as empty.” DiscountOS checks each item against its own compare-at price instead. ### Native collection workaround vs DiscountOS | | Native: collection with Compare-at price is not set | DiscountOS sale-item settings | |---|---|---| | What is checked | Whether the Compare-at price field is empty, per product | Whether the compare-at price is higher than the price the customer pays, per item | | A product with a compare-at price equal to its price | Left out of the collection, so no discount | Gets the discount, it is not on sale | | A product with one variant marked down and one not | In the collection, because any variant with an empty compare-at price matches, so the marked-down variant is discounted too | The marked-down item is skipped, the other is discounted | | Works on an order-wide tiered discount | Not described on the amount off page | **Exclude items on sale** on Spend More Save More | ## Which DiscountOS discount types can skip sale items? | DiscountOS discount type | Setting | What the docs say it does | |---|---|---| | **Spend More Save More** | **Exclude items on sale** (in **Applies to**) | “Skips any item priced below its compare-at price, so this discount is not added on top of an already reduced price.” | | **Price List** | **Exclude items with a compare-at price** (in **Price List Configuration**) | “Skips any item whose compare-at price is higher than the price the customer is paying” | | **Multi-offer**, product offers | **Compare-at price** · **is not higher than the current price**, in **Qualifying items** | Discounts the items that are not marked down | | **Multi-offer**, product offers | Discount type **Percentage off compare-at price** | Charges the Compare-at price minus your percentage; an item whose current price is already lower keeps it | Each setting works on automatic discounts and on discount codes. For a percentage off chosen products that skips sale items, use a Multi-offer product offer. For quantity tiers that skip sale items, use a Price List discount. ## How do you stop a discount code from applying to sale items? ### Spend More Save More: a percentage off the order that skips sale items 1. **Open DiscountOS, click Create discount, and choose Spend More Save More.** It sits under **Product page offers**, with the example “Spend $100, save 15%”. 2. **Choose the discount method and name it.** Pick **Automatic** and type a **Title**, or pick **Discount Code** and type the code. 3. **Set the spend tiers.** Edit **Spend (amount)** and **Get (% off the order)** on each tier, and use **Add tier** for more rungs. 4. **Turn on Exclude items on sale.** It sits in the **Applies to** card, under **Exclude specific items**. 5. **Set combinations, markets and dates, then save.** Save from the bar at the top of the page. ### Price List: quantity tiers that skip sale items 1. **Open DiscountOS, click Create discount, and choose Price List.** It sits under **Product page offers**. 2. **Set the Discount Type.** Pick **Percentage off**, **Fixed amount off** or **Fixed price per item**. The rest of the card appears once you do. 3. **Tick Exclude items with a compare-at price.** It sits in **Price List Configuration**, under **Count tiers**. 4. **Click Add rule for each tier.** Fill in **Quantity** and the amount, for example Quantity 5 and **Discount %** 10. 5. **Narrow the products, set markets and dates, then save.** ### Multi-offer: a product offer on full-price items 1. **Open DiscountOS, click Create discount, and choose Multi-offer Discount.** It sits under **Advanced**. 2. **Turn on Product discount** under **What does this discount give?**, then set **Discount type** to **Percentage off** and the value. 3. **Add a group in Qualifying items** with the condition **Compare-at price** · **is not higher than the current price**. The operator matches items whose compare-at price is not higher than the current price. Add more conditions to the same group, such as **Specific collections**, with **Match all** of these conditions. 4. **Under Applies to, set Discount these items to that group.** 5. **Set dates and save.** Every condition and operator is listed in the [Conditions docs](/docs/rules/conditions/). ## What to know before you exclude sale items - **Set compare-at prices in Shopify admin.** Every DiscountOS sale-item setting reads the Compare-at price on the product. An item marked down without a compare-at price looks full-price to the discount. - **Full-price items still get the discount.** Items with no compare-at price are not skipped by **Exclude items on sale** or **Exclude items with a compare-at price**. - **Storefront widgets follow the setting.** On Spend More Save More, the tier table and cart goal bar stay off the product pages of skipped items. - **Badges can follow it too.** A DiscountOS [Sale Badge](/docs/promotions/sale-badge/) has **Skip products with a compare-at price**, so a “20% off” badge does not show on items already marked down. - **Other discounts are separate.** Skipping sale items in this discount does not stop a different discount from reaching them. The native workaround is an automated collection with the condition Compare-at price is not set, used as the Applies to collection. DiscountOS skips sale items with Exclude items on sale on Spend More Save More, Exclude items with a compare-at price on Price List, and a Compare-at price condition on Multi-offer. **What counts as a sale item?** An item priced below its compare-at price, the crossed-out price you set on the product in Shopify admin. DiscountOS Exclude items on sale skips any item priced below its compare-at price, so the discount is not added on top of an already reduced price. **Does this work for discount codes?** Yes. Spend More Save More, Price List and Multi-offer each take Automatic or Discount Code as the method, and the sale-item settings work with either. **What happens to products with no compare-at price?** They are full-price items, so they get the discount. The DiscountOS settings skip items whose compare-at price is higher than the price the customer pays. On Multi-offer, the app describes the operator is not higher than the current price as matching when the product has no compare-at price as well. **Which DiscountOS discount types can skip sale items?** Spend More Save More (Exclude items on sale), Price List (Exclude items with a compare-at price) and Multi-offer product offers (a Compare-at price condition in Qualifying items). DiscountOS is free. ## Sources - Shopify Help Center, [Amount off discounts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-types/percentage-fixed-amount): the settings of a native amount off discount. [DiscountOS](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount) does it with a **Product discount** set to **Specific price** (3 for $50 that repeats as 6 for $100) or a **Bundle** discount with a **Fixed Bundle Price**. DiscountOS is free. DiscountOS is a Built for Shopify discount app that runs multiple offers inside a single automatic discount, including market-specific and tiered discounts. --- ## How do you create a mix and match bundle on Shopify? A 3 for $50 offer charges one total price for any three qualifying items, so a $24, a $20 and a $16 candle cost $50 together instead of $60. The Shopify Help Center says that to create product bundles, “you must have a bundles app installed on your Shopify store,” and it describes Shopify Bundles as an app to “create and edit fixed product bundles and multipacks.” A fixed bundle is one set of named products sold as a bundle product. A mix and match offer works differently: the shopper picks any three items from a collection, and a discount prices them as a set in the cart. The phrase mix and match does not appear on the Shopify Bundles Help Center page. DiscountOS builds the offer as a discount on the items already in the cart, so there is no bundle product to create: a Product discount with **Specific price**, set to **Quantity** 3 and **Total Price** 50, or a Bundle discount with a **Fixed Bundle Price** of 50. ## Shopify bundle deals: which DiscountOS setup fits? | Your offer | DiscountOS setup | |---|---| | Any 3 from one collection for $50, and 6 for $100 | **Product discount** · **Specific price** · Quantity 3 · Total Price 50 · **Repeat this pricing**: Unlimited | | Any 3 from Candles or Diffusers for $50 | **Product discount** · **Specific price** · one **Specific collections** condition listing both | | 3 for $50, 5 for $75 | **Product discount** · **Specific price** · **Add Tiers To This Discount** | | 2 candles + 1 diffuser for $50 | **Bundle** · **Specific Collection** · two requirements · **Fixed Bundle Price** 50 | | 3 of the same size and color for $50 | **Bundle** · **Customer must add same variant for the above quantity** | | 20% off any 2 items from one vendor | **Bundle** · **Product Vendor** · **Percentage Off** 20 | | A bundle price that keeps its value in other currencies | **Bundle** · **Convert to customer’s currency** on | ### Why a Shopify amount off discount does not make 3 for $50 The Shopify Help Center page on amount off discounts describes a **Minimum quantity of items** requirement and a fixed amount that “is applied proportionally across all items in the cart.” A fixed $10 off matches 3 for $50 when every item costs $20. With a $24, a $20 and a $16 item in the cart, the same $10 off still lands on $50, but a cart of three $24 items would need $22 off. That page describes no setting for one total price for a set of items. ## How to set up 3 for $50 with a DiscountOS Product discount Use this when any three items from a collection, or several collections, should cost $50, and a second set of three should cost another $50. 1. **Open DiscountOS, click Create discount, and choose Product Discounts.** It sits in the **Discounts** section of the create menu. 2. **Choose Automatic and type a Title**, for example “Candles 3 for $50”. Shoppers see it next to the saving. 3. **Add the qualifying items.** Click **Add your first rule** and pick *Specific collections · is one of · Candles*. To mix across collections, list them all in the same condition. 4. **Set Discount Type to Specific price.** Enter **3** in **Quantity** and **50** in **Total Price**. 5. **Set Repeat this pricing.** **Unlimited** lets the deal repeat as often as the cart allows, so 6 items are two sets. **Limit to** caps how many times it repeats in one order. 6. **Set Sort Products for Discount to Higher-priced items first.** The next section shows why. 7. **Set combinations, markets and dates, then save.** Save from the bar at the top of the page. For a ladder like 3 for $50 and 5 for $75, tick **Add Tiers To This Discount** and give each tier its own quantity and price. Every field is explained in the [Product discount docs](/docs/discounts/product/). ### Why the sort order matters with mixed prices When the cart holds more qualifying items than one set, **Sort Products for Discount** decides which items form the set. The DiscountOS docs say the setting matters when more items qualify than the discount will cover. A set price takes money off; a set whose items already cost $50 or less stays at its own price. Take a cart with three $10 items and one $40 item, on 3 for $50: | Sort Products for Discount | Items in the set | Set total before | Cart total after | |---|---|---|---| | **Lower-priced items first** | $10 + $10 + $10 | $30 | $70 (nothing off) | | **Higher-priced items first** | $40 + $10 + $10 | $60 | $60 | For mix and match on items with different prices, **Higher-priced items first** is the setting that gives the shopper the deal they expect. ## How to create a bundle discount with a DiscountOS Bundle Use this when the set has parts, like “1 cleanser + 1 moisturizer for $45”, or when the bundle price should convert into other currencies. 1. **Open DiscountOS, click Create discount, and choose Bundle Discounts.** It sits in the **Discounts** section of the create menu. 2. **Choose Automatic and type a Title**, for example “Skincare starter kit”. 3. **Pick the Bundle Item Type.** Choose **Specific Product**, **Specific Collection**, **Specific Variant**, **Product Tag** or **Product Vendor**. For a set built from several collections, pick **Specific Collection**; every requirement in the bundle then uses collections. 4. **Fill in Requirement 1.** Set **Required quantity**, then **Select collections** (or products, variants, tags or vendors). For any 3 from one collection, enter **3** and pick that collection. 5. **Click Add Requirement for each further part.** Every requirement must be in the cart for the bundle to apply. 6. **Set Discount type to Fixed Bundle Price** and enter the **Bundle price**, or choose **Percentage Off** and enter **Percentage off**. 7. **Keep specific products out, if needed.** On **Specific Collection**, tick **Exclude specific products** and pick the products that should not count toward that requirement. 8. **Set markets, dates and currency handling, then save.** Turn on **Convert to customer’s currency**, under the **Summary**, when the bundle price should keep its value for shoppers paying in another currency. Every field is explained in the [Bundle docs](/docs/discounts/bundle/). ## Tips for mix and match pricing - **Repeat with Specific price.** For “3 for $50, 6 for $100” from the same collection, use the Product discount with **Specific price** and **Repeat this pricing** on **Unlimited**. - **Keep the set price below the items it covers.** A set price is a discount, so a set of items that already costs less than the set price stays as it is. - **On a multi-currency store, set the currency on purpose.** On a Bundle, turn on **Convert to customer’s currency**. For a Specific price discount, scope it to the market whose currency you typed the price in. - **Scope competing offers by market.** Two bundles covering the same product with no market scope both run everywhere, and Shopify decides which applies. [Different discounts for different countries](/guides/shopify-discounts-by-market/) covers market scoping. - **Test a cart with one extra item.** Four items on a 3 for $50 offer show which three form the set. - **Check the margin on your cheapest mix.** The [break-even guide](/blog/discount-without-destroying-margin/) shows what a discount does to margin. Running a buy-and-get offer instead of a set price? [How to do buy 2 get 1 free on Shopify](/guides/buy-2-get-1-free/) covers it, and [how to discount the most expensive item in the cart](/guides/discount-most-expensive-item/) covers price sorting in more detail. ## Questions merchants ask **Can Shopify do a mix and match bundle discount without an app?** The Shopify Help Center says that to create product bundles on your store, you must have a bundles app installed. It describes Shopify Bundles as an app for “fixed product bundles and multipacks”, and the phrase mix and match does not appear on its Shopify Bundles page. DiscountOS runs 3 for $50 as a discount on the items already in the cart, with no bundle product to build. **How do I make 3 for $50 work across different collections?** In a DiscountOS Product discount with Specific price, add one Specific collections condition that lists every collection in the offer. In a DiscountOS Bundle, set Bundle Item Type to Specific Collection and add one requirement per collection, for example 2 from Candles and 1 from Diffusers. **What happens when a customer adds 6 items to a 3 for $50 offer?** With a DiscountOS Product discount set to Specific price and Repeat this pricing on Unlimited, 6 items make 2 sets and the shopper pays $100. Use Specific price with Repeat this pricing whenever the set price should repeat, for example 3 for $50 and 6 for $100. **Which items go into the set when the prices are different?** Sort Products for Discount decides. Higher-priced items first builds the set from the most expensive qualifying items, which is where a $50 set price takes money off. A set of items that already costs $50 or less stays at its own price. **Does the bundle price convert for customers paying in another currency?** On a DiscountOS Bundle, the price converts when Convert to customer’s currency is on. The switch is off by default, so the bundle price is used as typed in every currency. DiscountOS is free. ## Sources - Shopify Help Center, [Product bundles](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/bundles): “To create product bundles on your store, you must have a bundles app installed on your Shopify store.” Read on 26 September 2026. - Shopify Help Center, [Shopify Bundles](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/bundles/shopify-bundles): “Shopify Bundles is a free first-party bundles app that allows you to create and edit fixed product bundles and multipacks right from your Shopify admin, and is available on all Shopify plans.” The phrase mix and match does not appear on the page. A DiscountOS Shipping discount fills it with conditions: **Province / State code**, **Postal code** and **Shipping city** for the place, **Shipping type** and **Shipping method** for the rate, and **Cart subtotal** for the threshold. Kite’s listing puts market and cart targeting on Starter at $29 a month, logged-in customers and multiple rules per offer on Growth at $49 a month, and customer tags and segments on Pro at $99 a month. DiscountOS puts all of it in the free app: the [rule builder](/docs/rules/conditions/) groups conditions on the cart, the items and the customer with AND and OR, including customer tags, orders count, logged in and B2B. Product, order, shipping and price list discounts can be limited to [Shopify customer segments](/docs/rules/customer-eligibility/), and every discount type can be limited to the [markets](/docs/rules/markets-and-currency/) you choose. A VIP-only discount in one country is a free setup, on any Shopify plan. ## Why DiscountOS wins - **No order cap, ever.** Kite bills $29 a month from your 51st discount order. DiscountOS has no allowance to run out of. - **Advanced and Plus stores pay $0.** Kite’s Free and Starter plans are not for Advanced and Plus, so those stores start at $49 a month. DiscountOS is free on every Shopify plan. - **Pro-plan targeting, free.** Customer tags, segments, logged-in customers and markets cost up to $99 a month on Kite. In DiscountOS they come with the free app. - **Ten discount types in one app.** Product, order, shipping, Buy X Get Y, bundle, Multi-offer, Price List, Quantity Break, Spend More Save More and Gift with Purchase. ## How to move a promotion to DiscountOS 1. **Install DiscountOS** from the Shopify App Store and turn on the DiscountOS app embed in your theme, so gifts are added to the cart. 2. **List your live Kite offers**: gifts, BOGO and tiered discounts, and who each one targets. 3. **Rebuild each one** as Gift with Purchase, Buy X Get Y, Spend More Save More or Quantity Break, and add the same customer or market conditions. 4. **Schedule the start** for the moment you pause the old offer, so the two never run together. Each discount type is covered in the [DiscountOS docs](/docs/). Kite lists a Free plan for the first 50 discount orders each month, $29/month once you go over, and paid plans at $29, $49 and $99 a month. Of 14 Shopify discount apps whose listings we read on 26 September 2026, DiscountOS was the only one listed as free with no paid plan. **Does Kite work on Shopify Advanced and Plus for free?** No. Kite’s App Store listing marks its Free and Starter plans “Not for Shopify Advanced and Plus”, so those stores start on Growth at $49/month. DiscountOS is free on Basic, Shopify, Advanced and Plus. **Can DiscountOS target customers by tag or market like Kite?** Yes, for free. DiscountOS has customer tags, orders count, logged-in and B2B conditions, Shopify customer segments on product, order, shipping and price list discounts, and markets on every discount type. Kite lists market targeting on Starter ($29/month), logged-in customers on Growth ($49/month) and customer tags and segments on Pro ($99/month). **Why choose DiscountOS over Kite?** DiscountOS gives you free gifts added to the cart automatically, BOGO, tiered discounts, a cart goal bar and customer and market targeting with no order cap and no fee. Kite charges $29/month past 50 discount orders, and its targeting features sit on plans up to $99/month. **Is DiscountOS Built for Shopify?** Yes. DiscountOS and Kite both carry the Built for Shopify badge on the Shopify App Store. DiscountOS runs its discounts on Shopify Functions, so they apply in the cart and at checkout like Shopify’s own discounts. ## Sources - Kite on the [Shopify App Store](https://apps.shopify.com/kite-free-gift): Free plan “First 50 discount orders free each month. $29/mo billed only if you go over 50 orders”, “Not for Shopify Advanced and Plus plans”; Starter $29/month (“Show goal-based progress bars”, “Layer on market & cart targeting”, “Not for Shopify Advanced and Plus”); Growth $49/month (“Add multiple rules per offer”, “Target logged-in customers”); Pro $99/month (“Target by customer tags & segments”); Built for Shopify. DiscountOS shows the tiers as a table on the product page (the feature is called **Quantity Break**). DiscountOS is free. DiscountOS is a Built for Shopify discount app that runs multiple offers inside a single automatic discount, including market-specific and tiered discounts. --- ## Does Shopify support quantity breaks natively? Not inside one discount. The Shopify Help Center page on amount off discounts gives each discount one minimum requirement: you select **Minimum purchase amount** or **Minimum quantity of items**, and the page describes no tiers. A quantity ladder built that way is one discount per rung, and each automatic one counts toward the store’s limit, which the Help Center page on discount combinations states as “a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts,” app discounts included. Shopify does have volume pricing in B2B catalogs. The Help Center page on quantity rules and volume pricing in B2B says “Volume pricing lets you offer additional price breaks to customers when they purchase larger quantities of a product in a single order,” and “You can add up to 10 price breaks per product which are applied to each variant.” DiscountOS puts a volume discount ladder in one discount for every customer, with no B2B catalog needed: each tier is a bigger percentage off every unit, Shopify applies the highest tier the cart reaches, and the tier table on the product page shows shoppers what they save. ## What does a quantity break ladder look like? A $20.00 product on a three-tier DiscountOS Quantity Break: | Quantity in the cart | Tier | Price per item | |---|---|---| | 1 | No tier | $20.00 | | 2 to 4 | 10% off each | $18.00 | | 5 to 9 | 15% off each | $17.00 | | 10 or more | 20% off each | $16.00 | Tiers replace each other. At 5 items the shopper gets 15% off every unit, not 10% plus 15%. ### Percentage tiers or fixed-price tiers? | | DiscountOS Quantity Break | DiscountOS Price List | |---|---|---| | What a tier gives | A percentage off each item | **Percentage off**, **Fixed amount off** or **Fixed price per item** | | Tiers measured by | Quantity | **Total quantity of items** or **Total amount spent** | | How quantities count | **Across all selected items**, **Per product** or **Per variant** | The same three on quantity tiers, plus **Count towards tiers**: **Selected products only** or **Entire cart** | | Which items | **All products**, **Specific products** or **Specific collections** | **Specific products**, **Specific collections** and **Customer tags** in **Discount Rules** | | Adding tiers | **Add tier** for each rung | **Add rule** for each rung | | Show on storefront | Turned on for a new discount | Turn on **Show on storefront** in the discount | | Extra controls | Markets, combinations, dates | **Tier title (optional)**, **Only for company (B2B) customers**, **Only in one currency**, customer segments, **Convert to customer’s currency** | Pick Quantity Break for a short percentage ladder. Pick Price List for amounts, set prices, spend tiers or a wholesale ladder for company customers. ## How do you set up quantity price breaks on Shopify with DiscountOS? 1. **Open DiscountOS, click Create discount, and choose Quantity Break.** It sits under **Product page offers**, with the example “Buy 2, get 10% off each”. 2. **Choose the discount method and name it.** Pick **Automatic** and type a **Title**, or pick **Discount Code** and type the code. 3. **Choose the items.** In **Applies to**, pick **All products**, **Specific products** or **Specific collections**. 4. **Set the tiers.** A new quantity break starts with buy 2 for 10% off and buy 3 for 15% off. Edit **Buy (quantity)** and **Get (% off each)** on each row, and use **Add tier** for another rung. Each row must be higher than the row above it. 5. **Choose how quantities count.** **Count tiers** set to **Across all selected items** pools the quantities, so two different products count together. **Per product** and **Per variant** make each one reach the tier on its own. 6. **Add the tier blocks to your theme.** **Show on storefront** is on for a new quantity break. In the **Add to your theme** panel, click **Add** next to **Quantity Break Table** or **Quantity Break Picker**. The theme editor opens with the block ready to place; put it near the price or the buy button and click **Save**. 7. **Set combinations, markets and dates, then save.** Use **Discount can be combined with:**, **Markets** and **Active Dates**, then save from the bar at the top of the page. Every setting is explained in the [Quantity Break docs](/docs/discounts/quantity-break/). ## How do you set a fixed price or amount off per tier? Use a DiscountOS [Price List](/docs/discounts/price-list/). Open **Create discount**, choose **Price List** under **Product page offers**, and set **Discount Type** to **Percentage off**, **Fixed amount off** or **Fixed price per item**. Then choose **Tiers are based on**, **Count towards tiers** and **Count tiers**, and click **Add rule** for each tier. A few Price List rules to know: - **Pick the Discount Type before the amounts.** Changing it clears every tier’s amount, because 10 means 10% off, 10 off, or a price of 10 per item. - **Fixed price per item never raises a price.** Items already at or below the target are left alone. - **Each rule has its own threshold.** The field shows “Another rule already uses this quantity” when two match. - **Tier title (optional)** puts your own name for that tier on the discount line. - **Only for company (B2B) customers** gives the price list to customers buying for a company and to nobody else. ## How do you show quantity breaks on the product page? The DiscountOS [storefront widgets](/docs/promotions/widgets/) draw the ladder on the product page: - **Quantity Break Table** lists every tier with the quantity, what the shopper gets and the price. **Display quantities as range** shows “2–4” instead of “2+”, and **Show original price** crosses out the full price next to each discounted one. - **Quantity Break Picker** shows the tiers as tappable deal cards the shopper adds to the cart in one go. **Most popular tier** tags one card, and **Let shoppers mix variants per tier** lets shoppers build the tier from different variants. Tips for placing them: - **Tiers counted per variant?** Place the **Quantity Break Picker**, which shows them as deal cards. - **Two offers on one product?** **Choose which one shows** on the discount picks the offer the widget displays. - **No app embed needed.** The blocks render on their own. ## Can quantity breaks show on collection pages? The Quantity Break Table and Quantity Break Picker are product page blocks. To put the offer on product cards on collection pages, create a DiscountOS [Sale Badge](/docs/promotions/sale-badge/): leave **Fill from a discount** off, type **Badge text** such as “Buy 2, save 10%”, and set **Apply to** to **Specific collections**. To cross out prices on product cards instead, a struck-through price suits one flat percentage for every shopper; [how to show the discount price on a Shopify product page](/guides/show-automatic-discount-on-product-page/) walks through it. Spend-based ladders work the same way in one discount: see [how to set up tiered discounts on Shopify](/guides/spend-more-save-more-tiered-discount/). For the slot math behind putting tiers in one discount, read [How to have more than 25 automatic discounts on Shopify](/guides/shopify-25-automatic-discount-limit/), and for a side-by-side of discount apps, [the best Shopify discount apps in 2026](/blog/best-shopify-discount-apps-2026/). ## Questions merchants ask **Does Shopify have quantity breaks built in?** The Shopify Help Center page on amount off discounts gives each discount one minimum requirement, such as a minimum quantity of items, and describes no tiers inside one discount. Shopify’s B2B volume pricing adds price breaks inside B2B catalogs, and the Help Center says you can add up to 10 price breaks per product. **Can different products count toward the same quantity tier?** Yes, with Count tiers set to Across all selected items, the default in a DiscountOS Quantity Break. Per product and Per variant make each product or variant reach the tier quantity on its own. **How do I show quantity breaks on the product page?** Turn on Show on storefront in the discount, then use the Add to your theme panel to place the Quantity Break Table or the Quantity Break Picker block. The blocks follow the discount and show nothing when the offer is paused or over. **Can I show quantity breaks on collection pages?** The DiscountOS Quantity Break Table and Quantity Break Picker are product page blocks. For product cards on collection pages, a DiscountOS Sale Badge with your own text, such as Buy 2, save 10%, and Apply to set to Specific collections puts the offer on those cards. **Can a tier set a fixed price per item instead of a percentage?** Yes, with a DiscountOS Price List. Set Discount Type to Fixed price per item, and items already priced at or below the target are not discounted. Price List also offers Fixed amount off and tiers based on the amount spent. ## Sources - Shopify Help Center, [Amount off discounts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-types/percentage-fixed-amount): in the **Minimum requirements** section, select **Minimum purchase amount** or **Minimum quantity of items**. Shopify allows a maximum of **25 active automatic discounts** per store, and app discounts count toward the same 25. [DiscountOS](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount) applies multiple discounts at once from **one** automatic discount (the feature is called **Multi-offer**), so one slot carries many offers. DiscountOS is free. DiscountOS is a Built for Shopify discount app that runs multiple offers inside a single automatic discount, including market-specific and tiered discounts. --- ## What is Shopify’s 25 automatic discount limit? Shopify’s 25 automatic discount limit is the maximum number of automatic discounts a store can have active at the same time. The Shopify Help Center puts it in two sentences: “You can have a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts. This total includes app-based discounts.” That second sentence matters most. Every automatic discount counts toward the same 25, whether you made it in Shopify admin or an app made it for you, so a bundle app, a volume app and a gift app each spend slots from one shared pool. Shopify’s developer changelog shows app-based automatic discounts were capped at 5 until November 2024, when that cap rose to 25. The limit counts automatic discounts only: a discount code, which the shopper types in, is a separate kind of discount. The way to run more offers without breaking the limit is to make each automatic discount carry more than one offer. DiscountOS does this with product, order and shipping offers that each keep their own products, conditions and markets, while the whole discount uses one of the 25 slots. Three details decide how fast a store reaches it: - **Active means running now.** The Help Center counts active automatic discounts, so what matters is everything live at the same moment. - **Apps share the same 25.** “This total includes app-based discounts.” - **Codes are separate.** The limit counts automatic discounts, not codes. A store running a sale per collection, free shipping per country and a loyalty discount reaches 25 quickly. One automatic discount per offer is the pattern that fills the pool. ## How do you get around the 25 automatic discount limit? | Way | What it takes | Offers per slot | |---|---|---| | End or schedule unused discounts | Planning every campaign | 1 | | Move offers to discount codes | Shoppers must type the code | none used | | **Several discounts in one DiscountOS discount** (Multi-offer) | One setup page, applied automatically | **Many** | | **DiscountOS tiers** (Quantity Break, Price List, Spend More Save More, Gift with Purchase) | One setup page per ladder of tiers | Many tiers | The first two ways manage the limit. The last two change the math: each DiscountOS discount carries more than one Shopify discount would. ### How many offers fit in one discount slot The same five offers, set up two ways: | Offer | One discount each | DiscountOS Multi-offer | |---|---|---| | 20% off Dresses, US and UK | 1 slot | in “Spring sale” | | 15% off Shoes | 1 slot | in “Spring sale” | | Buy 3, save 10% | 1 slot | in “Spring sale” | | 10% off orders over $150, Canada | 1 slot | in “Spring sale” | | Free shipping, US | 1 slot | in “Spring sale” | | **Slots used** | **5 of 25** | **1 of 25** | Tiered offers work the same way. A DiscountOS Spend More Save More discount holds its whole ladder of spend tiers in one discount, and a DiscountOS Price List discount prices a whole collection with quantity tiers in one discount. A store that builds one discount per product or per tier is the store that runs out of slots. ## How to apply multiple discounts at once with DiscountOS 1. **Open DiscountOS, click Create discount, and choose Multi-offer Discount.** It sits under **Advanced** in the create menu. 2. **Choose Automatic and give the discount a title.** Shoppers see this title next to the saving, so name the campaign (“Spring sale”), not one number. 3. **Turn on the kinds of offer you need.** Under **What does this discount give?**, switch on **Product discount**, **Order discount** and **Shipping discount** in any combination. Add more of each with **Add another product discount** and its equivalents. 4. **Fill in each offer.** Every offer card has its own **Discount type** and value, its own **Qualifying items** (collections, tags, products, line quantity and more), its own **Requirements** and its own **Applies to**. 5. **Limit each offer to its own markets.** **Available in** on each card narrows that one offer to the markets you pick, inside the markets the whole discount runs in. This is how “Dresses in the US and UK, free shipping in the US” lives in one discount. 6. **Choose what happens when two offers reach the same item.** Under **When discounts overlap**, pick **Apply the first matching discount**, **Apply the discount that saves the most** or **Apply all matching discounts**. 7. **Set dates and save.** The whole discount now uses one of Shopify’s 25 automatic slots. Every setting on the page is explained in the [Multi-offer docs](/docs/discounts/multi-offer/). Market rules are covered in [Markets and currency](/docs/rules/markets-and-currency/). ## Setup tips before you merge discounts - **Name the campaign.** Shoppers see the discount’s title next to the saving from every offer inside it, so a campaign name (“Spring sale”) reads well. Give an offer its own discount when it needs its own name on the receipt. - **Shopify’s stacking rule for product discounts.** This is Shopify’s rule for every discount and every app. The Shopify Help Center states: “To combine multiple product discounts on the same line item, your store must be on the Shopify Plus plan.” Offers on collections that share no products never meet. - **Combinations still apply.** **Discount can be combined with** controls how this discount sits next to other discounts outside it. Shopify decides what applies to a cart. ## Where the offers show for the shopper - **In the cart and at checkout:** Shopify applies the matching offers automatically, following the overlap rule you chose, and shows the discount title next to the saving. Nothing to type. - **On product pages:** DiscountOS storefront blocks show the offer before the shopper adds anything. Two of them are a [sale badge](/docs/promotions/sale-badge/) and a [cart goal bar](/docs/promotions/cart-goal-bar/). Planning how deep each offer can go? The [break-even guide](/blog/discount-without-destroying-margin/) shows what a percentage does to margin. For a side-by-side of Shopify discount apps, read [the best Shopify discount apps in 2026](/blog/best-shopify-discount-apps-2026/). ## Questions merchants ask **How many automatic discounts can a Shopify store have?** Shopify allows a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts per store. The Shopify Help Center states that this total includes app-based discounts, so discounts created by apps count toward the same 25. **Can I raise the 25 automatic discount limit?** The Shopify Help Center gives 25 as the maximum and describes no way to raise it. What you can change is how much each discount holds: DiscountOS Multi-offer runs several product, order and shipping offers inside one automatic discount, so one slot carries many offers. **Do discount codes count toward the 25 limit?** The limit is on active automatic discounts. A discount code is a different kind of discount that the shopper types in, so moving a low-priority offer to a code frees an automatic slot, at the cost of the shopper having to enter it. **Is the 25 automatic discount limit higher on Shopify Plus?** The Shopify Help Center page on discount combinations names no higher automatic discount limit for Shopify Plus. Its Plus sentences are about stacking, for example: “To combine multiple product discounts on the same line item, your store must be on the Shopify Plus plan.” **How many offers can one DiscountOS Multi-offer discount hold?** You keep adding offers with Add another product discount, Add another order discount and Add another shipping discount. Each offer has its own discount type and value, its own qualifying items, its own requirements and its own markets, and the whole discount still uses one of Shopify’s 25 automatic slots. **Is DiscountOS free?** Yes. DiscountOS is free to install and use, and Multi-offer is included. DiscountOS carries the Built for Shopify badge on the Shopify App Store. ## Sources - Shopify Help Center, [Discount combinations](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-combinations): “You can have a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts. Shopify can limit a discount to markets, but one Shopify discount gives **one value** everywhere it runs. [DiscountOS](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount) runs an offer per market inside **one** discount (the feature is called **Multi-offer**), such as 20% off in the US and 15% off in Canada. DiscountOS is free. DiscountOS is a Built for Shopify discount app that runs multiple offers inside a single automatic discount, including market-specific and tiered discounts. --- ## Can Shopify limit a discount to one country? Yes. Shopify added markets to discounts, and the Shopify Help Center says that when you create or edit a discount, you can select which markets it applies to. A discount can be assigned to B2B, country or region, and retail markets, but not to channel markets, and automatic discounts run in every market until you assign them. Shopify’s developer changelog of 8 May 2026 lists Basic, Buy X Get Y, app and free shipping discounts, both automatic and code, as the types that take markets. The same changelog notes that markets and customer segments are separate eligibility choices on a native discount. Fixed amounts are set in the store’s default currency, and the Help Center explains that Shopify converts them into the customer’s local currency at the current exchange rate, so a 10 USD discount is worth whatever 10 USD is in euros that day. What a native discount does not change per market is its value: one discount gives the same percentage, or the same converted amount, everywhere it runs. So on native Shopify, a different offer per country means one discount per country, and each automatic one uses one of the 25 automatic discount slots. DiscountOS answers this with offers that each carry their own value and their own markets inside one discount, plus an exact amount per currency on the Order discount. ## How many discounts each setup needs Five countries with five different offers, set up two ways: | Setup | Discounts to build | Automatic slots used | |---|---|---| | One native discount per country | 5 | 5 of 25 | | **One DiscountOS Multi-offer discount, one offer per market** | **1** | **1 of 25** | The DiscountOS discount keeps one start date, one end date and one set of combination rules for the whole campaign, so a global sale starts and stops everywhere at once. ### What each market can get in DiscountOS | Market need | DiscountOS setting | |---|---| | A different percentage per country | One product or order offer per market, each with **Available in** set to that market | | Free shipping in one country only | A shipping offer with **Available in** set to that country | | A fixed amount that keeps its value abroad | **Convert to customer’s currency** switched on | | A round number in each currency (¥1,500, not ¥1,655) | **Set exact amounts for specific currencies** on the Order discount, for each currency you choose | | A spend threshold in each market’s currency | Money requirements on an offer convert with the switch, or stay as typed with it off | ## How to set a different discount per country with DiscountOS 1. **Open DiscountOS, click Create discount, and choose Multi-offer Discount.** It sits under **Advanced** in the create menu. 2. **Name the campaign.** Choose **Automatic** and type a title that describes the promotion, like “Global sale”. Shoppers in every market see this title next to their saving. 3. **Pick the markets the whole discount runs in.** Under **Where does this discount apply?**, keep **Apply to all markets** or choose **Apply to specific markets** and pick the markets you want. Every offer stays inside this selection. 4. **Add one offer per market.** Turn on **Product discount**, **Order discount** or **Shipping discount**, then use **Add another product discount** and its equivalents until each market has its own offer. 5. **Limit each offer to its market.** On each offer card, set **Available in** to **Specific markets only** and tick that offer’s markets. Until you pick, the offer runs in every market of the discount. 6. **Decide how amounts behave in other currencies.** **Convert to customer’s currency** sits under the Summary and is on by default for Multi-offer. On, a fixed amount and a money threshold keep their value in every currency. Off, each number is used as you typed it, which is how you give £8 off in the UK and ¥1,500 off in Japan from offers already limited to those markets. 7. **Save.** The whole campaign uses one of Shopify’s 25 automatic slots. ### Exact amounts per currency on an order discount For a single order-wide discount, the DiscountOS Order discount lets you type the exact amount customers paying in a given currency get, while every other currency converts from your main amount. Every market setting is explained in [Markets and currency](/docs/rules/markets-and-currency/), and every Multi-offer setting in the [Multi-offer docs](/docs/discounts/multi-offer/). ## Tips for discounts by market - **Name the discount in words, not money.** “Global sale” reads well next to a saving in any currency. “€10 off” reads oddly next to a converted amount. - **Scope each bundle to its market.** Two bundles for the same items with no market scope both run everywhere, and Shopify decides which applies. - **Keep your primary market in mind.** When you pick specific markets without your primary one, DiscountOS warns you so the discount does not silently skip your main market. - **“Apply to all markets” includes future markets.** A market you add to Shopify later is covered without editing the discount. Running more than a few campaigns at once? [How to have more than 25 automatic discounts on Shopify](/guides/shopify-25-automatic-discount-limit/) covers the slot limit in full. For a side-by-side of Shopify discount apps, read [the best Shopify discount apps in 2026](/blog/best-shopify-discount-apps-2026/). ## Questions merchants ask **Can a Shopify discount be limited to one country?** Yes. The Shopify Help Center says that when you create or edit a discount, you can select which markets it applies to. Discounts can be assigned to B2B, country or region, and retail markets, but not to channel markets. **Can one Shopify discount give a different amount in each country?** A native Shopify discount gives one value to every market it is assigned to, so a different offer per country means one discount per country. DiscountOS Multi-offer puts several offers inside one discount and limits each offer to its own markets, so 20% off in the US and 15% off in Canada live in one discount. **How are fixed-amount discounts converted into other currencies?** The Shopify Help Center explains that a fixed amount is set in the store’s default currency and converted into the customer’s local currency at the current exchange rate. DiscountOS adds a Convert to customer’s currency switch, and on the Order discount you can type an exact amount for each currency you choose. **Can I choose which markets one DiscountOS discount runs in?** Yes. On every DiscountOS discount type you keep Apply to all markets or choose Apply to specific markets and pick the markets you want. On a Multi-offer discount, each offer can also narrow to its own markets inside the ones the whole discount runs in. **Does it work for Buy X Get Y, bundles and quantity breaks?** Yes. Every DiscountOS discount type has a Markets setting, including Buy X Get Y, Bundle, Price List, Quantity Break, Spend More Save More and Gift with Purchase. DiscountOS is free. ## Sources - Shopify Help Center, [Discounts and gift cards in Markets](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/markets/discounts-and-gift-cards): assigning discounts to markets, the market types that take them, and fixed-amount conversion. DiscountOS reads your discount’s percentage and shows ~~$29.99~~ **$23.99** on product pages and product cards (the feature is called **Price Drop**). Shopify takes the same amount off in the cart. DiscountOS is free. DiscountOS is a Built for Shopify discount app that runs multiple offers inside a single automatic discount, including market-specific and tiered discounts. --- ## Does Shopify show automatic discounts on the product page? No. The Shopify Help Center page on automatic discounts says they are “automatically applied in the cart and at checkout when eligibility conditions are met,” and it describes no display on the product page. The saving shows up once the item is in the cart. The native way to show a sale price before the cart is a compare-at price. The Help Center page on sale pricing says the compare-at price and the price “can be displayed on product pages and collection pages, but only the sale price is displayed at checkout.” That route means entering the sale price in the product’s **Price** field, so the product price itself changes. DiscountOS leaves the product price alone and displays the discount instead: it takes the percentage from one of your discounts, crosses out the regular price and prints the discounted price beside it, on product pages and product cards. Shopify still applies the discount in the cart, and pausing the discount removes the struck-through price. ## What are the ways to display a discount price in Shopify? | Way | Where shoppers see it | What you change | |---|---|---| | Native automatic discount | In the cart and at checkout | Nothing shows on the product page | | Compare-at price | Product pages and collection pages; checkout shows only the sale price | The product’s **Price** | | **DiscountOS Price Drop** | Product pages, product cards on collection pages and in search results, home page cards when the discount targets collections or specific products | Nothing; the display follows your discount | | **DiscountOS Sale Badge** | The page types you tick: home, collection, search, product and cart pages | Nothing; a label such as “20% off” | The first two rows come from the Shopify Help Center pages on automatic discounts and sale pricing. A Price Drop and a Sale Badge are display only: the money is always taken off by Shopify when it checks the cart. ### What a Price Drop shows, in numbers | Product price | Discount behind the Price Drop | Shown on the product page | |---|---|---| | $29.99 | 20% off | ~~$29.99~~ $23.99 | | $29.00 | 15% off | ~~$29.00~~ $24.65 | | $80.00 | 10% off | ~~$80.00~~ $72.00 | DiscountOS works the price out the same way the discount engine does, so the shown price is the price the discount produces. Change the percentage and the shown price changes with it. ## How do you show a sale price on the product page without changing the price? In DiscountOS the struck-through price is called a **Price Drop**. Here is how to set one up: 1. **Create the discount first.** Pick a percentage discount to drive the Price Drop, for example a DiscountOS [Product discount](/docs/discounts/product/) with one percentage that every shopper gets. 2. **Turn on the app embed.** In the Shopify admin sidebar under **Apps**, open DiscountOS **Promotions** and click **Enable in theme editor**. In the theme editor’s **App embeds** panel, switch **Promotions** on and click **Save**. Do this in your **published** theme. 3. **Create the Price Drop.** On the Promotions page, click **Create promotion** (or **Create a Price Drop** on an empty **Price Drops** tab) and pick **Price Drop**. 4. **Name it and choose the discount.** **Name** is only for you. **Discount** lists the discounts a Price Drop can use, and the form confirms what shoppers will see. 5. **Pick the discounted price color.** **Discounted price color** offers six presets. The first is the default. 6. **Keep some items at their plain price.** In **Where it appears**, turn on **Exclude specific items** and pick the products and collections that should keep their regular price. 7. **Set markets and dates, then save.** **Markets** appears when your store has more than one market; tick none to show the Price Drop in every market. **Active dates** uses your store’s timezone. Save from the bar at the top. Every setting is explained in the [Price Drop docs](/docs/promotions/price-drop/), and the switch it depends on in [App embed](/docs/promotions/app-embed/). ## Why is the discount not showing on the product page? Work down this list: - **It is a native automatic discount.** The Shopify Help Center page on automatic discounts places it in the cart and at checkout. - **The app embed is off.** With the DiscountOS embed off, Price Drops and Sale Badges show nothing. Your discounts still apply, so shoppers still get the money. - **The embed is on in a draft theme.** An app embed turned on only in an unpublished theme does not reach shoppers. - **The discount you want is missing from the list.** The **Discount** list shows the discounts a Price Drop can use, and a disclosure under the field names any other discount and what to change so it can be picked. - **The product already shows a lowered compare-at price.** DiscountOS leaves those products as they are. - **Your theme keeps its price in its own element.** **Theme selectors** on the Promotions page points DiscountOS at your theme’s **Price element on the product page** and **Price element in product cards**. - **The discount is paused or deleted.** The Price Drop follows its discount and stops with it. ## How do you show tiered or member-only offers on the product page? A struck-through price is the same for every shopper, so it suits one flat percentage. For a buy-more ladder, a spend ladder or an offer for some customers, DiscountOS has three other displays: - **A Sale Badge in your own words.** Leave **Fill from a discount** off, type **Badge text** such as “Buy 2 get 1 free”, and choose where it shows with **Apply to**. See [Sale badge](/docs/promotions/sale-badge/). - **Tier tables on the product page.** The Quantity Break Table, Quantity Break Picker and Spend More Save More blocks draw a tier ladder. See [Storefront widgets](/docs/promotions/widgets/), and the guides on [quantity breaks](/guides/quantity-breaks-volume-discount/) and [spend more, save more tiers](/guides/spend-more-save-more-tiered-discount/). - **A cart goal bar.** It shows how much more to spend for the next tier. See [Cart goal bar](/docs/promotions/cart-goal-bar/). ## Showing the discount price: settings at a glance | Setting | What you get | |---|---| | Discount behind it | One of your percentage discounts, for example a Product discount with one percentage | | Where it shows | Product pages, product cards on collection pages and in search results, and home page cards when the discount targets collections or specific products | | Items left at their regular price | The products and collections you pick in **Exclude specific items** | | Markets and dates | The markets you tick, and start and end dates in your store’s timezone | | Discounted price color | Six presets | | Two discounts on one product | One price is shown, and Shopify decides which discount applies in the cart | Running many discounts at once? [How to have more than 25 automatic discounts on Shopify](/guides/shopify-25-automatic-discount-limit/) covers the slot limit. Before picking a percentage to show on every product page, the [break-even guide](/blog/discount-without-destroying-margin/) shows what it does to margin. ## Questions merchants ask **Does Shopify show automatic discounts on the product page?** The Shopify Help Center page on automatic discounts says they are “automatically applied in the cart and at checkout when eligibility conditions are met.” The page describes no display on the product page, so the saving shows up once the item is in the cart. **Why is my discount not showing on the product page?** A native automatic discount applies in the cart and at checkout, according to the Shopify Help Center page on automatic discounts. With a DiscountOS Price Drop, check three things: the Promotions app embed is on in your published theme, the Price Drop is linked to a percentage discount that is running, and the product does not already show a lowered compare-at price. **Can I show a sale price without changing the product price?** Yes. A DiscountOS Price Drop displays the old price struck through with the discounted price beside it, worked out from the percentage of one of your discounts. The product price stays as it is, and Shopify applies the discount in the cart. **Which discounts can drive a Price Drop?** A percentage discount that gives every shopper the same saving, for example a DiscountOS Product discount with one percentage. The Discount list on the Price Drop form shows the discounts you can pick. For tiered offers, the DiscountOS tier table blocks and Sale Badges show the offer on the product page. **Does the Price Drop show on collection pages too?** Yes. DiscountOS shows the struck-through price on product pages, on product cards on collection pages and in search results, and on product cards on your home page when the discount targets collections or specific products. ## Sources - Shopify Help Center, [Automatic discounts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-methods/automatic-discounts): “Automatic discounts are discounts that are automatically applied in the cart and at checkout when eligibility conditions are met.” Read on 26 September 2026. - Shopify Help Center, [Setting sale prices for products](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/details/product-pricing/sale-pricing): “Both these amounts can be displayed on product pages and collection pages, but only the sale price is displayed at checkout.” Read on 26 September 2026. - Shopify Help Center, [Discount combinations](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-combinations): “You can have a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts. Shopify applies the highest tier the cart reaches (the feature is called **Spend More Save More**). DiscountOS is free. DiscountOS is a Built for Shopify discount app that runs multiple offers inside a single automatic discount, including market-specific and tiered discounts. --- ## Can Shopify do tiered discounts natively? Not inside one discount. The Shopify Help Center page on amount off discounts gives each discount one minimum requirement: you select **Minimum purchase amount** or **Minimum quantity of items**, and the page describes no tiers. A spend ladder built natively is therefore one discount per tier, for example 10% off orders over $50 as one discount and 15% off orders over $100 as another. When discounts that cannot combine all match a cart, the Help Center page on discount combinations says “the best discount or combination of discounts automatically applies to the customer’s cart.” Every automatic discount in that ladder counts toward Shopify’s limit, which the Help Center states as “a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts,” app discounts included. DiscountOS turns that ladder into a single automatic discount that uses one slot: each spend tier carries its own percentage off the order, and a cart goal bar tells shoppers how much more to spend for the next tier. ## How many discounts each setup needs The same four tiers, set up two ways: | Spend tier | Native Shopify discounts | DiscountOS Spend More Save More | |---|---|---| | Spend $50, get 10% off the order | Discount 1 | Tier 1 | | Spend $100, get 15% off the order | Discount 2 | Tier 2 | | Spend $200, get 20% off the order | Discount 3 | Tier 3 | | Spend $300, get 25% off the order | Discount 4 | Tier 4 | | **Automatic slots used** | **4 of 25** | **1 of 25** | The DiscountOS discount keeps one start date, one end date, one set of exclusions and one set of combination rules for every tier, so the ladder is edited in one place. ### What each rule does in a DiscountOS ladder | Rule | How it works | |---|---| | Tiers | A full ladder in one discount, one rung per **Add tier** | | **Spend (amount)** | A money amount above 0, higher on every tier | | **Get (% off the order)** | Between 1 and 100, higher on every tier | | Which tier applies | The highest tier the cart qualifies for; tiers never add up | | Per-tier message | Your own message on the discount line while that tier applies | | Excluded items | The products and collections you choose | | Markets | Every market, or the specific markets you pick | ## How do you set up tiered spend discounts on Shopify with DiscountOS? 1. 3. **Set the tiers.** A new discount starts with two tiers: spend 50 for 10% off, and spend 100 for 15% off. Edit **Spend (amount)** and **Get (% off the order)** on each tier, and use **Add tier** for another rung. The new tier is pre-filled at twice the amount above as a suggestion. 4. **Name a tier on the order if you want.** **Message shown on the discount line (optional)** replaces the discount title on the discount line while that tier applies. A short message reads best. 5. **Carve out items that should stay at full price.** **Applies to** is the entire order. Turn on **Exclude specific items** to keep chosen products or collections at full price, then choose under **Spend tiers and conditions** whether they **Count excluded items toward them** or **Ignore excluded items everywhere**. **Exclude items on sale** skips anything priced below its compare-at price. 6. **Add conditions only if you need them.** The **Conditions** card has **Customer tags**, **Account status**, **B2B customers**, **Past orders**, **Cart quantity** and **Cart contents**. A cart must meet every condition you turn on. Leave Conditions off if you want the tier table and cart goal bar on your storefront. 7. **Decide how amounts behave in other currencies.** With **Convert to customer’s currency** on, Shopify converts your spend tier amounts into the currency the customer pays in. Off, your numbers are used as typed in every currency. 8. **Add the storefront blocks.** **Show on storefront** is on for a new discount. In its **Add to your theme** panel, click **Add** next to **Spend More Save More**, which lists every spend tier on the product page, or **Cart Goal Bar**, which shows progress toward the next tier in the cart. 9. **Set combinations, markets and dates, then save.** Use **Discount can be combined with:**, **Markets** and **Active Dates**, then save from the bar at the top of the page. Every setting is explained in the [Spend More Save More docs](/docs/discounts/spend-more-save-more/). ## How do shoppers see how close they are to the next tier? The DiscountOS [Cart Goal Bar](/docs/promotions/cart-goal-bar/) shows the shopper how close the cart is to the next tier, with a line of text and a progress bar. Its default **Goal text** reads `Spend {amount} more to get {percent} off`, and DiscountOS fills in the amount and percentage, for example “Spend $20 more to get 15% off”. Once a tier is reached and another remains, the line switches to the **Tier reached text**. At the top tier it switches to the **Unlocked text**, `You’ve unlocked {percent} off!`, and the bar takes the unlocked color. A few rules decide what the bar and the tier table show: - **Leave Conditions off to show the ladder.** The table and goal bar show the offer to every shopper, and Shopify applies the discount to every cart that reaches a tier. - **Excluded items stay clear.** The table and goal bar stay off the excluded items’ product pages. - **Codes get a hint.** On a code discount, the blocks show the **Code hint prefix**, “Use code” by default. - **No app embed needed.** The blocks render on their own. ## Can one discount code adjust with the cart value? Yes. Create the Spend More Save More discount with **Discount Code** as the method, and the ladder applies once the shopper enters the code: the higher the cart, the higher the tier. A code discount shows a **Maximum discount usage** card with **Limit number of times this discount can be used in total** and **Limit to one use per customer**. ## What if the tier should change item prices instead? Spend More Save More takes a percentage off the whole order. When each tier should lower the price of chosen products instead, DiscountOS [Price List](/docs/discounts/price-list/) with **Tiers are based on** set to **Total amount spent** takes a percentage off, a fixed amount off or sets a price per item once the spend reaches a tier. For tiers measured in items rather than money, read [how to set up quantity breaks and volume discounts](/guides/quantity-breaks-volume-discount/). Tiered discounts are one way to fit more offers into Shopify’s 25 automatic slots; [How to have more than 25 automatic discounts on Shopify](/guides/shopify-25-automatic-discount-limit/) covers the rest. To check what each tier costs you, the [break-even guide](/blog/discount-without-destroying-margin/) works through the margin math. ## Questions merchants ask **Can Shopify do tiered discounts without an app?** The Shopify Help Center page on amount off discounts gives each discount one minimum requirement: a minimum purchase amount or a minimum quantity of items. It describes no tiers inside one discount, so a native ladder is one discount per tier, and each automatic one counts toward the 25 active automatic discounts a store can have. **Do spend tiers add up?** No. In a DiscountOS Spend More Save More discount, Shopify applies the highest tier the cart qualifies for and takes that one percentage off the whole order. Tiers replace each other. **Can one discount have several spend tiers?** Yes. A DiscountOS Spend More Save More discount holds the whole ladder: click Add tier for each rung. Each tier needs a higher spend amount and a higher percentage than the tier above it, and the whole ladder uses one of Shopify’s 25 automatic slots. **Can a tiered discount be one discount code?** Yes. Choose Discount Code as the discount method, and the whole ladder applies once the shopper enters the code: the higher the cart, the higher the tier. Usage limits sit in the Maximum discount usage card. **Do spend tiers work in other currencies?** With Convert to customer’s currency on, Shopify converts your spend tier amounts into the currency the customer pays in, so a spend 100 tier asks for the same value everywhere. The percentage off is unchanged either way. ## Sources - Shopify Help Center, [Amount off discounts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-types/percentage-fixed-amount): in the **Minimum requirements** section, select **Minimum purchase amount** or **Minimum quantity of items**. To hand out a different code to every customer, you need an app that adds codes to the discount in bulk. [CodeOS](https://apps.shopify.com/codeos-bulk-discount-codes) does it for free: pick a discount, set a pattern like WELCOME-XXXXXXXX, choose how many codes you want, and export the list as a CSV for email, SMS or print. The whole setup takes about five minutes and is shown below, screen by screen. ## Why one shared code is a problem A single code such as SAVE20 works until it leaves your control. It gets posted on coupon sites, shared in group chats and used by people who were never meant to have it. You cannot tell which email, influencer or campaign brought the order, and you cannot stop the leak without killing the whole promotion. Unique codes fix all of that. Each customer gets their own code, each code works once, and the code itself tells you where the sale came from. Email tools like Klaviyo, SMS tools and loyalty programs are built to hand out one code per person, and they need a list of codes to draw from. The catch is that the Shopify admin has no way to make that list. The discount form takes one code. Shopify does allow apps to add codes to a discount in bulk through its [Admin API](https://shopify.dev/docs/api/admin-graphql/latest/mutations/discountRedeemCodeBulkAdd), and the [Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-types) points merchants to discount apps for anything beyond the basics. So you need an app, and most of them charge for it. ## What you need - A Shopify store on any plan. - [CodeOS - Bulk Discount Codes](https://apps.shopify.com/codeos-bulk-discount-codes), free on the App Store. There is no plan to choose and no card to add. - Five minutes. ## Step 1: Create the discount Bulk codes attach to an existing code discount and inherit everything it does: the value, the products it applies to, the minimum purchase, the dates and the combination settings. You can use a discount you already have, or create one inside CodeOS. To create one in the app, open CodeOS, click **Create codes**, then **Or create a new discount for these codes**. Fill in: - **Discount type**: Percentage off products, Fixed amount off products, Free shipping or Buy X get Y. - **Title**: what customers see at checkout, for example "Newsletter welcome · 10% off". - **Primary code**: the discount's first code, for example WELCOME10. Your bulk codes join it next. - **Value** and **Applies to**: 10% off all products in this example. - **Minimum purchase requirement**: none, an amount or a quantity. - **Usage & combinations**: keep **Limit uses per code** at 1 to make every code single-use, and **One use per customer** ticked. Click **Save** in the bar at the top. The discount is created in Shopify and CodeOS takes you straight to the code wizard with it selected. If you would rather create the discount in the Shopify admin, do that first under Discounts, then pick it in the next step. ## Step 2: Set the code pattern The wizard has two parts. **1. Discount** shows the discount you picked, with a Change link if you want another one. **2. Code pattern** is where you design the codes. - **Number of codes**: how many codes this batch creates. 500 in this example. - **Random part length**: how many random characters each code gets. 8 is a good default. Short random parts run out of combinations at high counts, so keep 8 or more for big batches. - **Characters**: letters and numbers, letters only, or numbers only. - **Prefix** and **Suffix**: text added to every code, such as WELCOME- or -2026. This is what makes a code readable and tells you which campaign it came from. - **Skip look-alike characters**: leaves out 0, O, 1, I and L so nobody mistypes a code from a printed card. - **Group with dashes every 4 characters**: turns AB12CD34 into AB12-CD34. - **Add a Uniqueness Stamp**: marks every code in the set so codes can never repeat across your sets, even with the same pattern. The **Preview** on the right shows sample codes as you type, and the **Summary** shows how many codes the discount will have after this batch and how long the run will take. Two things the summary reminds you of, both Shopify rules rather than app rules: - Usage limits apply to each code individually. A limit of 1 makes every code single-use. - After the batch, the discount's original code can never be renamed. ## Step 3: Add the codes Click **Save** in the top bar. CodeOS generates the codes and adds them to the discount in Shopify. A batch of 500 takes a few seconds; large batches show a progress bar with the number added so far and the time left. You can leave the page and come back. {/* SHOT PENDING: set page while running and complete (03-set-complete.png) */} When the set is complete you get a report: how many codes were added, how many already existed on the discount, and how many failed, with a downloadable list of any failed rows. Every code in the set is listed on the page with its status, and you can search the list. ## Step 4: Export the codes Open the discount in CodeOS and choose **Export codes (CSV)** from the set's Actions menu. The file lists every code in the set. Upload it to Klaviyo, Mailchimp, your SMS tool or your loyalty program, which then hands one code to each customer. For print, the same file goes to your printer. {/* SHOT PENDING: discount page with the Actions menu open on Export codes (04-export.png) */} You can also open the discount in the Shopify admin from the same page to see redemptions and usage per code. ## Import codes you already have If another tool has already generated your codes, or you are moving from another app, choose **Import your own codes** in step 2 instead of Generate new codes. Add a CSV or text file with one code per line, or a column called code. Nothing is added yet at this point. CodeOS reads the file first and shows a check: how many rows it found, how many are ready to add, how many are duplicates inside the file, and how many were rejected, with a download of the rejected rows so you can fix them. Then you confirm, and the codes go onto the discount. ## Seven ways merchants use bulk codes 1. **Welcome series.** One single-use code per new subscriber, sent by your email tool, instead of a WELCOME10 that ends up on a coupon site. 2. **Win-back.** A code for customers who have not ordered in 90 days, so the discount reaches only them. 3. **Influencers and affiliates.** A batch per partner with their name as the prefix, such as ANNA-XXXXXXXX. Redemptions show exactly who sent the order. 4. **Loyalty rewards.** Points redeemed for a code the customer can use once. 5. **Print.** Codes on packaging inserts, receipts or event cards. Skip look-alike characters and group with dashes so they are easy to type. 6. **Apologies and service recovery.** Support hands out one code per case, so a goodwill discount cannot be reused or shared. 7. **Giveaways and partnerships.** A fixed number of codes for a partner's audience, which caps how much the promotion can cost. ## What it costs, compared Every figure below was read from the app's Shopify App Store listing on 8 September 2026 and links to it. Prices are regular monthly prices. | App | Rating (reviews) | Free tier | Paid from | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | [CodeOS](https://apps.shopify.com/codeos-bulk-discount-codes) | 5.0 (1) | Free, no code limit | No paid plan | | [Cody](https://apps.shopify.com/cody-bulk-discount-codes) | 5.0 (5) | Free | No paid plan listed | | [Bulk Discount Code Bot](https://apps.shopify.com/bulk-discount-generator) | 4.9 (274) | 3 discount sets | $19/mo (not for Plus), $99/mo | | [Code Bulk Discounts](https://apps.shopify.com/code-bulk) | 4.9 (40) | 500 codes, lifetime | $14.99/mo | | [BulkBunny](https://apps.shopify.com/bulk-bunny-bulk-discount-codes-generator) | 4.8 (6) | 10,000 codes in 3 sets | $14.99/mo, $34.99/mo on Plus | | [MyBulk](https://apps.shopify.com/bulk-discounts) | 4.4 (155) | Free to install | $1 per set up to 10,000 codes, $3 up to 100,000, $5 up to 250,000 | | [Bulk Discount Codes Generator](https://apps.shopify.com/dyno-bulk-discount-code-generator) | 5.0 (62) | Trial only | $9.85/mo | | [Amai Bulk Discount Codes](https://apps.shopify.com/amai-discount-code-generator) | 4.2 (11) | None listed | $6.95/mo | CodeOS is new, launched in July 2026, which is why the review count is small. It is built by the team behind [DiscountOS](/), a Built for Shopify discount app with a 5.0 rating, and it is free with no cap on codes. ## Shopify rules for bulk discount codes - **Codes**: no cap. Run as many batches as you need. - **Per code**: letters, numbers, dashes and underscores. - **Per order**: Shopify applies at most 5 discount codes to one order, whatever app made them ([Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/managing-discounts)). - **Renaming**: once bulk codes are on a discount, Shopify no longer lets you rename the discount's original code. - **Deleting the discount**: codes belong to the discount. They stop working when it expires and are gone if it is deleted. - **Removing codes**: a set can be removed from the discount from inside CodeOS if you added the wrong file or want to end a campaign early. ## Questions merchants ask **Can Shopify create bulk discount codes on its own?** No. The discount form in the Shopify admin takes one code per discount. Shopify lets apps add more codes through its Admin API, which is how a bulk code app works, and CodeOS does this for free. **How many discount codes can I create with CodeOS?** As many as you need. No monthly limit, no cap on codes, no paid plan. **How do I make every code single-use?** Set the usage limit on the discount to 1. Usage limits apply to each code separately, so every code in the batch becomes single-use. **Can I import codes I already have?** Yes. Choose Import your own codes, add a CSV or text file with one code per line, review the check, and confirm. **How do I get the codes into Klaviyo, SMS or print?** Export the set as a CSV from the discount page in CodeOS and upload it to the tool. **Do bulk codes work with discounts made by other apps?** Yes. Codes attach to any code discount, including DiscountOS discounts, and inherit its value and rules. ## Related reading - [The 8 best Shopify discount apps in 2026](/blog/best-shopify-discount-apps-2026/) - [Free gift with purchase on Shopify](/blog/free-gift-with-purchase-shopify/) - [How to discount on Shopify without destroying your margin](/blog/discount-without-destroying-margin/) ## Sources - Shopify App Store listings, read on 8 September 2026: [CodeOS](https://apps.shopify.com/codeos-bulk-discount-codes), [Cody](https://apps.shopify.com/cody-bulk-discount-codes), [Bulk Discount Code Bot](https://apps.shopify.com/bulk-discount-generator), [Code Bulk Discounts](https://apps.shopify.com/code-bulk), [BulkBunny](https://apps.shopify.com/bulk-bunny-bulk-discount-codes-generator), [MyBulk](https://apps.shopify.com/bulk-discounts), [Bulk Discount Codes Generator](https://apps.shopify.com/dyno-bulk-discount-code-generator), [Amai Bulk Discount Codes](https://apps.shopify.com/amai-discount-code-generator). - Shopify Help Center: [Discount types](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-types) and [Managing and editing your discounts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/managing-discounts). - Shopify developer docs: [discountRedeemCodeBulkAdd](https://shopify.dev/docs/api/admin-graphql/latest/mutations/discountRedeemCodeBulkAdd), the API that adds codes to a discount in bulk. --- # The 8 best Shopify discount apps in 2026, compared with real pricing Source: https://discountos.app/blog/best-shopify-discount-apps-2026/ Updated: 2026-09-26 The best Shopify discount app in 2026 is [DiscountOS](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount): ten discount types, customer and market targeting, several offers in one discount and storefront badges, all free with no paid plan. Every other app in this list charges once you grow, by plan, by order count or by revenue. Every figure below was read from each app’s Shopify App Store listing on 8 September 2026 and links to it. ## How we compared them We searched the Shopify App Store for “discount”, kept the apps that run general promotions rather than one narrow feature, and read each listing in full. Every app was scored on the same five points: 1. **Discount types.** Product, order and shipping discounts, buy X get Y, bundles, volume tiers, spend-and-save, free gifts. 2. **Targeting.** Conditions on the cart, the items and the customer, customer segments, and Shopify Markets. 3. **Storefront display.** Whether shoppers see the deal on the product page and in the cart, and how that is delivered (theme app blocks or injected scripts). 4. **Pricing model.** Free, flat monthly, or usage-based, and what the free tier excludes. 5. **Built for Shopify.** Whether the app carries Shopify’s badge for performance, design and integration. We did not run a lab test of each app on a store. Where a claim comes from a listing rather than from our own use, the listing is linked. ## The comparison at a glance | App | Rating (reviews) | Pricing (Sept 2026) | Best for | |---|---|---|---| | [DiscountOS](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount) | 5.0 (22) | Free, every plan, no limits | Every promotion type plus targeting, free | | [Discounty](https://apps.shopify.com/discounty-bulk-discount-sales) | 4.9 (1,243) | Free plan; paid from $9.90/mo | Bulk price edits and campaign scheduling | | [Kite](https://apps.shopify.com/kite-free-gift) | 4.9 (1,168) | Free to install; $29/mo over 50 discount orders | Free gifts and BOGO with progress bars | | [Pumper](https://apps.shopify.com/pumper-quantity-breaks-product-bundles-discounts) | 4.9 (3,438) | Free up to $300 generated; from $9.99/mo | Bundle and quantity-break widgets | | [Dealeasy](https://apps.shopify.com/volume-discounts-dealeasy) | 4.9 (625) | Free to install up to 50 orders/mo; from $9/mo | Volume discounts and mix-and-match bundles | | [Regios](https://apps.shopify.com/regios-automatic-discounts) | 4.9 (193) | From $34.99/mo, 7-day trial | Nested rule logic for complex promotions | | [Discount Kit](https://apps.shopify.com/discount-kit) | 4.9 (95) | From $49.99/mo, 7-day trial | Tiered volume and gift discounts with widgets | | [Discount Mixer](https://apps.shopify.com/discount-mix) | 5.0 (240) | Free plan; paid from $8.99/mo | Many discount types on a small budget | Ratings and review counts are from the Shopify App Store on 8 September 2026. Introductory first-month prices are excluded; the “from” figure is the regular monthly price of the cheapest paid plan. ## 1. DiscountOS: every discount type, free on every plan [DiscountOS](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount) covers the widest range of promotion types in this list without a paid tier: product, order and shipping discounts, [buy X get Y](/docs/discounts/buy-x-get-y/), [bundles](/docs/discounts/bundle/), [quantity breaks](/docs/discounts/quantity-break/), [price lists](/docs/discounts/price-list/), [spend more, save more](/docs/discounts/spend-more-save-more/), [gift with purchase](/docs/discounts/gift-with-purchase/) and a [multi-offer](/docs/discounts/multi-offer/) type that combines product, order and shipping offers in one discount. Nine of the ten run as an automatic discount or a discount code. **Targeting** is where it separates from the pack. The [rule builder](/docs/rules/conditions/) takes twenty-plus conditions on the cart, the items and the customer, grouped with AND and OR. Product, order, shipping and price list discounts can be limited to [Shopify customer segments](/docs/rules/customer-eligibility/), so a wholesale or VIP segment gets its own pricing with nothing to tag by hand. Every discount can be scoped to specific [Shopify Markets](/docs/rules/markets-and-currency/), with money amounts converted to the shopper’s currency or kept as typed. **Storefront:** [sale badges](/docs/promotions/sale-badge/), [price drops](/docs/promotions/price-drop/), [quantity break tables and a picker](/docs/promotions/widgets/), and a [cart goal bar](/docs/promotions/cart-goal-bar/) render as theme app blocks and an app embed, so they use your theme’s fonts and colours and follow the discount they belong to. **Guardrails:** maximum discount amounts, cart value limits, item limits, product and collection exclusions, usage limits, and [block codes](/docs/block-codes/) that refuse leaked codes with your own message in the code field. **Pricing:** free on Basic, Shopify, Advanced and Plus, with no order or revenue caps. **Why it ranks first:** it is the only app in this list that is free with no caps, and it still covers ten discount types, from Buy X Get Y to Multi-offer. It also never rewrites your product prices: every deal is a real Shopify discount on top, so your catalogue stays clean. Of 14 Shopify discount apps whose listings we read on 26 September 2026, DiscountOS was the only one listed as free with no paid plan. *Built for Shopify: yes.* ## 2. Discounty: bulk price edits and scheduled campaigns [Discounty](https://apps.shopify.com/discounty-bulk-discount-sales) describes itself as an all-in-one price editor and discount app. It runs product, volume and quantity discounts, BOGO with automatic add-to-cart, cart discounts and free shipping, and it can add conditions on customer segments, POS or online, and purchase type. Its strength is campaign management: scheduled start and end times, bulk price edits across many variants, and countdown and badge widgets. **Pricing:** a free Starter plan limited to 10 live discounted variants and 3 campaigns. Paid plans were on a first-month promotion when we checked; the regular prices are $9.90, $29.90 and $49.90 per month, each raising the variant and campaign limits. **The catch:** the free tier is small, and the price-editing approach means the discount is the product price itself rather than a Shopify discount applied on top. *Built for Shopify: yes.* ## 3. Kite: free gifts, BOGO and progress bars [Kite](https://apps.shopify.com/kite-free-gift) by Skai Lama focuses on conversion mechanics: free gift with purchase that adds and removes gifts at cart thresholds, buy X get Y applied in the cart, tiered product and shipping discounts, and storefront progress bars and widgets. If a free gift is the only thing you need, DiscountOS runs the same automatic add-and-remove gift with no order cap; the [free gift with purchase guide](/blog/free-gift-with-purchase-shopify/) walks through the setup. **Pricing:** free to install for the first 50 discount orders a month, then $29 a month once you pass 50. Starter, Growth and Pro plans run $29, $49 and $99 a month. The listing states the free plan is not available on Shopify Advanced and Plus. **The catch:** pricing scales with discount orders, and Advanced and Plus stores start on a paid plan. *Built for Shopify: yes.* ## 4. Pumper: bundle and quantity-break widgets [Pumper](https://apps.shopify.com/pumper-quantity-breaks-product-bundles-discounts) is a bundle builder first. It creates quantity breaks and bundle offers with per-unit, percentage or flat discounts, free gifts and BOGO inside the bundle, and it integrates with page builders and cart drawers. It has the largest review count in this list. **Pricing:** free until the app has generated $300 in extra revenue, then Starter at $9.99, Growth at $29.99 and Unlimited at $49.99 a month, with the tiers defined by revenue the app attributes to itself. **The catch:** it is a bundle and quantity-break app, not a general discount engine. Order-level rules, shipping discounts and customer-segment targeting are not its focus. *Built for Shopify: yes.* ## 5. Dealeasy: volume discounts and mix-and-match bundles [Dealeasy](https://apps.shopify.com/volume-discounts-dealeasy) by Logbase builds quantity breaks, tiered pricing and volume bundles on the product page, mix-and-match bundles with a fixed bundle price, BOGO, free products and a rewards bar. **Pricing:** free to install for stores up to 50 orders a month, then $9, $19 and $29 a month by your store’s total order count. **The catch:** the tiers count every order your store takes, not only discounted ones, so a growing store moves up the ladder whether or not it uses the app more. *Built for Shopify: yes.* ## 6. Regios: nested rule logic for complex promotions [Regios Automatic Discounts](https://apps.shopify.com/regios-automatic-discounts) pioneered a flowchart-style logic builder for Shopify discounts. It handles buy X get Y, fixed price, thresholds, shipping discounts and auto-added gifts, and it can stack several discounts in one rule. **Pricing:** no free plan. Starter is $34.99 a month for up to 500 discounted orders, then Business at $59.99, Enterprise at $119.99 and Scale at $249.99, with a 7-day trial. **The catch:** it is the most expensive entry point here, and pricing is capped by discounted orders per month. *Built for Shopify: yes.* ## 7. Discount Kit: tiered volume and gift discounts with widgets [Discount Kit](https://apps.shopify.com/discount-kit) by Optizio adds tiered product volume, order volume and gift with purchase discounts, a customisable “advanced” discount, and storefront components built to upsell. **Pricing:** Lite at $49.99 a month with 25 automatic and unlimited manual discounts, Pro at $99.99 and Enterprise at $349.99, each with a 7-day trial. **The catch:** there is no free plan, and the Lite tier caps automatic discounts at 25. *Built for Shopify: yes.* ## 8. Discount Mixer: many types on a small budget [Discount Mixer](https://apps.shopify.com/discount-mix) covers product, volume, cart, buy X get Y, BOGO, free gift and shipping discounts, customer-segment targeting, and widgets for sale badges, countdown timers, volume tables and cart savings. **Pricing:** a free plan, then Essential and Pro plans that were on a first-month promotion when we checked, with regular prices of $8.99 and $20.99 a month, and Ultimate at $49.99. **The catch:** the free plan is limited, and paid plans run up to $49.99 a month. *Built for Shopify: yes.* ## Which one should you pick? Start with DiscountOS. Whatever the promotion, it covers it for $0: - **Every promotion type and precise targeting, no monthly bill:** DiscountOS. It is the only app here that is free with no caps. - **Bundles and quantity breaks:** DiscountOS Bundle and Quantity Break, with tier tables and a picker on the product page, free. Pumper charges by the revenue it attributes to itself, and Dealeasy by your store’s order count. - **Free gifts and BOGO:** DiscountOS Gift with Purchase adds and removes the gift automatically with no order cap. Kite charges $29 a month past 50 discount orders, and its free plan is not available on Advanced or Plus. - **Complex rules:** the DiscountOS rule builder groups twenty-plus conditions with AND and OR, free. Regios starts at $34.99 a month. - **Several offers in one discount:** DiscountOS Multi-offer, free. Discount Kit puts its version on the $99.99-a-month Pro plan and Dollarlabs starts at $25 a month (see [DiscountOS vs Discount Kit](/blog/discount-kit-alternative/) and [DiscountOS vs Dollarlabs](/blog/dollarlabs-alternative/)). Whichever you choose, run the [break-even maths](/blog/discount-without-destroying-margin/) before the first campaign. A 20% discount on a 40% margin needs double the units just to stand still, and the app that shows the offer best cannot fix a promotion that loses money by design. ## Questions merchants ask before installing **What is the best free discount app for Shopify?** DiscountOS is free on every Shopify plan with no usage limits, and covers ten discount types plus storefront badges, price drops and tier tables. Among the others, Discounty and Discount Mixer have free plans with limits, and Kite, Dealeasy and Pumper are free to install with usage-based paid tiers. **Do I need an app for BOGO or volume discounts on Shopify?** Shopify can create a basic buy X get Y and simple amount-off discounts natively. An app is what adds quantity tiers shown on the product page, bundles with one price, free gifts added to the cart automatically, market-specific deals, customer-segment targeting and rules that combine several conditions. **Will a discount app slow down my store?** Apps built on Shopify Functions run the discount on Shopify’s servers, so the checkout does not wait on a third-party server. Storefront widgets are theme blocks that render with your theme. Check that any app you pick uses Shopify Functions and theme app blocks rather than injected scripts. **Can these apps show the discounted price before checkout?** Most of the apps in this list ship storefront widgets: volume tables, badges or price displays on the product page. DiscountOS adds sale badges, price drops, quantity break tables, a picker and a cart goal bar as theme blocks and an app embed. **How did you choose and rank these apps?** We searched the Shopify App Store for discount apps, kept the ones that cover general promotions rather than one narrow feature, and compared each on discount types, targeting, storefront display, pricing model and the Built for Shopify badge, reading each listing on 8 September 2026. Each app’s entry ends with its catch. ## Sources - Shopify App Store listings, read on 8 September 2026: [DiscountOS](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount), [Discounty](https://apps.shopify.com/discounty-bulk-discount-sales), [Kite](https://apps.shopify.com/kite-free-gift), [Pumper](https://apps.shopify.com/pumper-quantity-breaks-product-bundles-discounts), [Dealeasy](https://apps.shopify.com/volume-discounts-dealeasy), [Regios](https://apps.shopify.com/regios-automatic-discounts), [Discount Kit](https://apps.shopify.com/discount-kit), [Discount Mixer](https://apps.shopify.com/discount-mix). - Shopify Help Center: [Discount combinations](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/combining-discounts) and [Shopify Functions](https://shopify.dev/docs/apps/build/functions) for how app discounts run on Shopify’s servers. - Shopify: [Built for Shopify](https://shopify.dev/docs/apps/launch/built-for-shopify) badge requirements. --- # Free gift with purchase on Shopify: how to add one automatically, for free Source: https://discountos.app/blog/free-gift-with-purchase-shopify/ Updated: 2026-09-26 Shopify can make a gift free with a native Buy X get Y discount, but it cannot put the gift in the cart for the shopper. The Help Center says so in plain words: the customer must add every item manually. The apps that do add it automatically usually charge from about $7 to $50 a month or cap the free plan at a handful of orders. [DiscountOS](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount) does it free on every Shopify plan, with no order limit. The setup takes about five minutes and is below, screen by screen. --- ## What a free gift with purchase is, and how it compares to a percentage off A free gift with purchase (GWP) gives the shopper a specific item at $0 once the cart passes a threshold: spend $100, get the tote; buy three candles, get the fourth. It is the offer beauty brands have run at counters for decades, and it works online for the same reasons. - **It moves the order up, not the price down.** A 15% code lowers every order. A gift at $75 pulls the $60 cart to $75 and leaves full-price orders alone. - **It costs you cost price, not retail.** The shopper values the gift at its shelf price. You pay what it cost you. A $12 sample kit that costs $3 reads as a 12% reward and costs 3%. - **It moves inventory you choose.** Samples, last-season colours, the accessory nobody finds on its own. If you have not read it yet, our [break-even guide](/blog/discount-without-destroying-margin/) shows why a 20% discount at 40% margin needs double the units to break even. A gift rarely gets anywhere near that. ## The three ways to run it on Shopify | Method | Adds the gift to the cart by itself | Threshold types | Cost | |---|---|---|---| | [DiscountOS](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount) | Yes, with the app embed | Spend or quantity, optional gift tiers, same-item mode | Free on every plan, no order cap | | Shopify’s native Buy X get Y | No. The customer adds the gift manually | Quantity or amount of specific items | Included in Shopify | | A paid gift app (Monk, Fokkio, BOGOS) | Yes, with the app’s embed | Spend, quantity, product rules | Free plans capped at 10 orders/month (Fokkio) or 30 orders total (BOGOS); paid from $6.99 to $49.99/month; Monk from $1 for the first month then a paid plan | ### Method 1: DiscountOS, free with no order cap DiscountOS runs gift with purchase as a real Shopify discount on Shopify Functions, so the gift is priced at $0 by Shopify itself, and its app embed adds the gift to the cart when the cart qualifies and removes it when the cart stops qualifying. There is no order cap and no paid tier, on Basic, Shopify, Advanced and Plus. The setup is below, screen by screen. ### Method 2: Shopify’s built-in Buy X get Y Shopify ships a Buy X get Y discount type. You choose what the customer buys, what they get, and set the “get” discount to free. It is quick and it costs nothing. The catch is the one line from Shopify’s [Buy X get Y help page](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-types/buy-x-get-y): > Customers must add all items to their cart manually. The free or discounted “get” item is never automatically added to the cart. So the shopper has to know the gift exists, find it, and add it. Most will not. Merchants on the Shopify Community forum end up adding custom theme code to push the item in, which breaks on the next theme update. Use the native discount if the gift is something the shopper already wants to add, and you are happy telling them to. ### Method 3: a paid gift app The gift-app category is crowded and the good ones are polished. Reading the listings on 8 September 2026: - **Monk Free Gift, BOGO and Upsell**, 4.9 stars from 587 reviews. $1 for the first month, then a paid plan; free only for development stores. - **Fokkio Free Gift With Purchase**, 4.8 stars from 78 reviews. A free plan up to 10 orders a month, then $6.99 a month for 50 orders and $12.99 above that. - **BOGOS: Free Gift Bundle Upsell**, 5.0 stars from 4,349 reviews. A free plan with 30 free orders in total, then $29.99 a month for 300 orders and $0.05 per extra order, or $49.99 a month. They all add the gift to the cart automatically. What you pay for is the order volume, and a busy store crosses the free tier in a weekend. For a wider comparison of what each discount app covers beyond gifts, see [the 8 best Shopify discount apps in 2026](/blog/best-shopify-discount-apps-2026/). ## How to add a free gift with purchase automatically You need DiscountOS installed, which takes one click from the [App Store listing](https://apps.shopify.com/remix-discount), and the gift product published in your store. ### 1. Open Gift with Purchase from the create menu In the app, choose **Create discount**. Gift with Purchase sits under Advanced, next to Multi-offer and Block Codes. ### 2. Name it and set the trigger Type a **Title**. Shoppers see it on the discount line, so write it the way you would say it: “Free tote over $100”. Then choose how **The gift unlocks by**: **Minimum spend** for a money threshold or **Minimum quantity** for a unit count. Turn on **Count only these items** if only some products, collections or tags should count toward the threshold. That is how you make a gift that only the skincare collection unlocks, or that ignores gift cards. ### 3. Pick the gift In **Free gift**, pick one to five product variants. With more than one, the shopper can choose which they want. Set **Free quantity**, the units given free per order, and if you want a ceiling, **Maximum gifts per order**. Three switches change the shape of the offer: - **Gift tiers** turns one threshold into a ladder of steps: spend $50 for one sample, $100 for two, $200 for the full-size. Each order gets one tier’s worth, so tiers do not stack. - **Same item as the gift** appears for a quantity trigger and turns the offer into “buy 2, get the 3rd free” on the same product. The third unit is the gift. - **Repeat this offer** hands out the gift again for every full set, so buy 4 gets 2 free. ### 4. Turn on the app embed once The **Storefront** card in the discount shows whether the DiscountOS app embed is on in your theme. With it on, the gift is added to the cart by itself the moment the cart qualifies, and taken out if the shopper drops below the threshold. Turn it on from the card’s button, which opens your theme editor on the App embeds panel; it stays on for every future gift. ### 5. Set the rest and save - **Conditions** limit who gets the gift: customer tags, logged-in only, B2B, order count, a cart attribute. - **Discount can be combined with** has product discounts ticked for a new gift on purpose, so a running sale does not block the gift. Untick it if the gift should be the only discount. - **Markets** limit the gift to the countries you choose, and **Active Dates** schedule it in your store’s timezone. Save. The gift is a live Shopify discount from that moment. Add a qualifying cart in your own storefront and watch the line appear at $0. ## Seven gift with purchase ideas Each one is a few minutes in the setup above. 1. **Threshold just above average order value.** If your average order is $62, unlock the gift at $75. The shopper adds one more item to get there. 2. **Sample as the gift.** A travel size that costs you $2 introduces a full-size product you sell for $30. 3. **Buy 2, get the 3rd free** with Same item as the gift, on consumables that shoppers restock anyway. 4. **Gift tiers for a launch.** $50 gets the sticker pack, $100 gets the tote, $200 gets the hoodie. Show the ladder in the [cart goal bar](/docs/promotions/cart-goal-bar/) so shoppers see the next step. 5. **VIP gift.** Add a customer tag condition so only tagged customers see the offer. 6. **Market-specific gift.** A gift for one country during a local holiday, scoped with Markets. 7. **Clearance as the gift.** Last season’s colour moves out at cost, attached to full-price orders. Run the numbers first. Gift cost divided by the threshold is your effective discount rate; keep it where your margin can carry it. ## Where it shows for the shopper - **In the cart and at checkout:** the gift appears as a line at $0.00 with your title on the discount line. Automatic discounts apply in the cart, not only on the last step. - **On the product page:** pair the gift with a [cart goal bar](/docs/promotions/cart-goal-bar/) or a [sale badge](/docs/promotions/sale-badge/) so the offer is visible before the shopper adds anything. - **On Shopify POS:** the gift is not added by itself, because there is no theme to run the embed. Staff add the gift and it rings up free. ## Questions merchants ask **Can Shopify add a free gift to the cart automatically?** Not on its own. Shopify’s native Buy X get Y discount makes the gift free, but the Help Center states the customer must add every item to the cart manually and the gift is never added automatically. An app that runs on Shopify Functions with a theme app embed can add and remove the gift for the shopper. **What is the best free gift with purchase app for Shopify?** DiscountOS runs gift with purchase free on every Shopify plan, with spend or quantity triggers, gift tiers, a choice of gifts, automatic adding and removing, and no order limits. Fokkio and BOGOS have free plans capped at 10 orders a month and 30 orders in total respectively; Monk is paid. **How much should the free gift cost me?** Treat the gift like a discount: its cost to you divided by the spend it unlocks is the effective discount rate. A $4 gift that unlocks a $100 order is a 4% discount, which most margins can absorb. Set the threshold a little above your current average order value so the gift lifts orders rather than rewarding what shoppers already spend. **Does the free gift work with discount codes or on Shopify POS?** In DiscountOS the gift runs as an automatic discount and combines with product discounts by default, so a code the shopper enters can still apply. On Shopify POS the gift is not added by itself because there is no theme; staff add it and it rings up free. **Can I do buy 2, get the 3rd free of the same product?** Yes. A 20% discount on a typical product doesn't shave 20% off your profit. It can wipe out half of it. The fix isn't discounting less out of fear; it's knowing your break-even multiplier before you launch, and choosing a *structure* (targeted, threshold-based) instead of a blunt sitewide code. Do that and discounts become a growth lever instead of a slow leak. --- ## Do discounts actually hurt your profit? They can, and most do. In an analysis of 117 million Shopify discounts, Seguno found that around 90% were "at risk": open-ended, ungoverned, and quietly eating margin. The problem isn't the discount. It's running one without doing the single calculation that tells you whether it can possibly pay off. Here's the trap. You discount, sales volume jumps, the dashboard looks great, and net profit is flat or down. You celebrated revenue and paid for it with margin. To avoid that, you need the number almost nobody calculates first. ## The math nobody runs: your break-even discount When you take a percentage off, that percentage comes straight out of your margin, not your price-tag pride. So the real question is this: *how many more units do I have to sell just to make the same gross profit I'd have made at full price?* The formula is simple: > **Units multiplier to break even = Gross margin ÷ (Gross margin - Discount)** Say your gross margin is 40%. Here's what each discount actually demands of you: | Discount | You need to sell… | …just to break even | |----------|-------------------|---------------------| | 10% off | 1.33× the units | +33% more units | | 15% off | 1.60× the units | +60% more units | | 20% off | 2.00× the units | +100% more units | | 25% off | 2.67× the units | +167% more units | | 30% off | 4.00× the units | +300% more units | Read that 20% row again. A 20% discount means you must **double your unit sales** before you've earned a single extra dollar of profit. If the promo lifts sales by 40%, you didn't grow. You went backwards, and worked harder doing it. Run this for *your* margin before any promo. If you can't realistically hit the multiplier, the discount is a loss you've pre-approved. ## Why a 20% code costs more than 20% Two reasons the headline number lies. First, the margin math above: on a 40%-margin product, 20% off is half your profit, not a fifth. On a 35% margin, Shopify-focused analyses put a 20% discount at an effective margin of roughly 15% after the cut. That's often below what you paid to acquire the customer through ads in the first place. Second, leakage. A sitewide code reaches everyone, including the people who were going to buy at full price anyway. Every one of those redemptions is pure giveaway. You're not converting a hesitant shopper. You're refunding a loyal one. ## Blanket vs. targeted: where the margin leaks A 10%-off-everything banner feels generous and reads as a 10% problem. It's usually worse, because it hits your best-sellers and your most loyal buyers hardest, the orders that needed no help at all. It can even drag down average order value: a $70 cart becomes $63, and you've taught the customer to wait for the next sale. Targeted discounting plugs the leak. Instead of "10% off for everyone," you decide *who* and *when*: - New customers only, to win the first order, not repeat buyers who'd convert anyway. - A threshold ("spend $90, get free shipping") that *raises* the cart instead of cutting it. - Slow-moving SKUs, not your hero products. - A win-back offer for lapsed customers, where the alternative is zero revenue. Same generosity, a fraction of the bleed, because it lands only where it changes a decision. ## When discounting is the right call, and when it isn't Discount when it tips a decision that wouldn't have happened anyway: a first purchase, a subscription sign-up, a stalled cart, dead stock you need to clear, a quiet season that needs momentum. Don't discount on reflex. Running aggressive promos every few weeks trains customers to never pay full price, and stacking them right after a heavy Q4 just prolongs the margin hangover into the new year. If the sale would have happened anyway, the discount is a cost with no job. ## How to put guardrails on it Whatever tool you use, a margin-safe discount has limits built in *before* it goes live: - **Caps and usage limits** so a promo can't run away from you. - **Eligibility rules** (by customer tag, login state, B2B status, or region) so the offer reaches only who it's meant for. - **No accidental stacking** with other active discounts at checkout. - **A hard end date**, scheduled in advance. This is exactly the gap between a raw discount code and a rules-based setup. Native codes apply broadly. A targeting layer lets you say *new customers, in this region, on these products, this week only, once each.* That's the difference between a discount that funds growth and one that funds your customers' patience. Run the break-even multiplier, pick a structure over a number, and put the guardrails up first. That's the whole strategy. --- **Related reading:** [The 8 best Shopify discount apps in 2026, compared with real pricing](/blog/best-shopify-discount-apps-2026/).
